Yet ANOTHER version of 'Hallelujah'

Post by Geoffrey »

To see 4 men singing Leonard Cohen's 'Halleluja' last night, go to:
http://www.nrk.no/programmer/tv/forst__ ... 07852.html
Then click on:
Først & sist 24. februar: . . . (under 'LYD OG VIDEO')
and a new window will open up.
Then click on:
Først & sist 24.02.06
and spool almost to the end of the show (move the pointer to about 45 minutes).
I'm not sure it will work for overseas viewers - but I hope so.
The four singers (Kurt Nilsen, Askil Holm, Espen Lind & Alejandro Fuentes) are known collectively as 'De Nye Gitarkameratene'.

'Først & sist'
NRK1 24 Feb 2006
Repeated NRK2 25 Feb 2006

You could see it? I wasn't sure it would work for people viewing from abroad. That's great! Yes, it's been shown twice on TV here. I do so hope Leonard gets payment for it. People tell me that he is so kind that he'd hesitate before sending a bill, but his management could approach them. NRK TV is a state national enterprise. By law we have to buy their expensive television licence even though we watch commercial stations. They are greedy, and they have plenty of money. Leonard could accept a cheque from them with an easy conscience.

I haven't been able to get it yet. If it's 4 guys sitting with a 5th, in a circle, I'm there ~ but the image is frozen... and it keeps talking about buffering, but not much seems to be happening.

Hi lizzytysh. Yes, you are there. Sometimes you have to just wait until the buffering reaches 100%. I don't know a lot about it, though. By the way, I wrote a long collective answer to you and a couple of other people last night, but afterwards decided not to post it.

Stay well -

That's a shame. I'd like to have read it. Did it disappear with your decision, or is it still accessible in Word or elsewhere?

So far, so good, on staying well. Thanks. You, too.

I'll try again, later, with the buffering. Problem was that I couldn't minimize it, so there I sat with it taking up my entire screen, so I couldn't even continue my own work whilst it buffered.

This is SO frustrating... at least I'm hearing the beginning, and then it Stops.

A very lovely group of young men, they are, too... genuine, sweet, sincere, unaffected, bashful, uncontrived. I love seeing that with performers. They're not trying to act 'cool' ~ just being themselves... and what a visible difference that is to those who do otherwise.

I can tell I'll really like this cover, but I can't get to the spot where the others join in.

Oh my G~d... this is soooooo beautiful!!! I'm getting it in pieces and have heard the chubbier-faced fellow with dark brown hair wonderfully do his part, and now the stunning vocal lifts of interpretation by the blonde guy with spaces between his teeth... I can't get it to play all the way through, though... no matter what I do. I want a copy of this very much! Do they have an album out, Geoffrey?? Who are they? What's the album? So carefully, caringly, and gently rendered. Spiritual.

My new favourite of the song by a male/males, other than Leonard.

In closing, if I were a mom, I'd be very proud to have any one of these young men as my son. They've been raised with such a fine presence. I love their demeanour/s ~ "Well done!" :D to their mothers 8) .

Impressive performance. It doesn't come out too
good when the four of them sing it as a chorus, but each of them singing separetly they all bring a different tone that is very interesting.

Could you give us a bit of insight on the context. How did they introduce the song, any specific reason why this song on this particular show? Are they promoting an album that would include this cover?

I picked this up from the web about De Nye Gitarkameratene. Could you clarify the references to LC in the text:

Thanks for bringing this up.

I haven't been able to get them singing all together, yet... beginning to wonder whether I will. However, I could listen to, " . . . but all I've ever learned from love . . . " over and over and over and over... I like the way their voices come together in the song's ending.

I, too, am interested in the answers to your questions, Simon... love your signature  , too. If they have an entire album, that has this cover on it, I'm very interested as to what the rest of it sounds like.

Oh dear, I've just woke up and need a cup of tea. But I'll have a go.

>Bare én øving

Only ONE rehearsal.

>De nye gitarkameratene hadde bare én øving på baken, men i går så det ut som de hadde slitt ut flere turnébusser sammen.

'The New Guitar-pals' had only one rehearsal behind them, but yesterday they looked like they had worn out several tour buses together.

>Først ute var Espen Lind med sin gamle slager «When Susana Cries».

Espen Lind started the show with his old hit 'When Susanna Cries'.

>Deretter fikk Kurt hjelp av Espen til å fremføre «Never Easy», før Askil Holm spilte en låt fra sitt kommende album, «Ain't No Cure for Loving», sammen med de andre.

Then Kurt helped Espen to perform 'Never Easy', before Askil Holm, together with the others, played a song from his forthcoming album, 'Ain't No Cure For Loving'.

>Ali fikk god hjelp på David Grays «Sail Away», men mest imponerende var fellesfremførelsen av Leonard Cohen-låten «Hallelujah».

Ali received some help on David Gray's 'Sail Away', but most impressive of all was the collective performance of Leonard Cohen's song 'Hallelujah'.

>- Selv Leonard Cohen hadde fått gåsehud, sa en rørt Ivar Dyrhaug.

"Leonard Cohen himself would have gotten goose-pimples!", said a moved Ivar Dyrhaug.

>De nye gitarkameratene følte at det var den låten som fungerte best som en fellesnevner, da de først skulle spille en coverlåt.

After deciding to do a cover song, 'The New Guitar-pals' felt that 'Hallelujah' was the one that worked best as a joint number.

>- Jeg så låten fremført av Jeff Buckley på Roskilde for flere år siden. Den er ganske ihjelspilt, men det er en låt som fortjener det, fordi den er vakker i så mange forskjellige versjoner, sa Askil Holm.

"I saw that song performed by Jeff Buckley at Roskilde several years ago. It's been covered almost to death, but it's a song that deserves it - because it's beautiful in all its many different versions," said Askil Holm.

>- Det er en grunn til at den er ihjelspilt, mente Espen Lind.

"That's one reason why it's been played to death," added Espen Lind.

>Seansen ga Holm mersmak til å skrive nye låter til sitt neste album.

This has given Holm a taste for more, and to write new songs for his next album.

I don't know the names of each of these guys, but it seems they don't normally play together at all? Do any of them normally play together? DRAT! It sounds like this cover isn't going to be available for further listening :( !

NUTZ!! I've tried many times but have only heard and seen snipets. ABout 5-10 seconds works fine and then it pauses to buffer. After a couple of these I just see the still with no voice even though the timer shows that the streaming is continueing. There is a message shown on the bottom of the screen "To optimize streaming click here" but that doesn't work. Drat.

Blonde hair, check shirt, gapped front tootypegs, excellent vocal range and a depth of tone that deserves his own record contract. The others are good, no doubt about it, however, that lad has power and the ability to be a solo artist.
