The Anti-Folk Movement

Post by lightning »

The Anti-folk movement isn't really anti-folk-- it's contemporary singer-songwriter. It got that name when a bunch of young musicians were denied the mike by established folk performers because they were too raw and too real. The best of them is Jeffrey Lewis who has a new CD out called "City and Eastern Songs," his most professionally produced effort so far. This link will take you to a French made documentary about the artists in this interesting movement:

No, this is a New York City singer/songwriter who is most well known in England and France. He's just back from a tour.

Lightning, I read yesterday about some of these musicians in newspapers. I know they're called anti-folk, I have CD by Devendra (spelling) and some others, but journalist kept to call them "freak-folk" all the time. Did you heard for that term?

Yes, I have heard that term for them. "Freak" used to be an alternative word for "hippy" and these young people are either hippies or children of 60's hippies or beatniks. Both Devendra Banhart and Jeff Lewis were sons of hippies. Their songs tend to be freaky in a good way-- fresh and unconventional.

let's not forget Roger Miller of Mission of Burma fame and Billy Bragg.
The latter is actually one of the pillars of the movement imo.
