There may be those of you who know, or don't know, that in a recent interview with Maclean's magazine in Canada, Leonard Cohen admitted he had lost his money -- and was forcing himself to return to the studio.
The news hit me as a complete surprise; and though as a fellow who's known many days of brokeness I deeply sympathised; somehow in the corner of my lips developed a little smile. A little one -- a half-smile. Though I am embarassed that I am saying this, somehow it was an all-too-fitting end (or is it a new beginning?) for such a great legend.
"The Grocer of Gloom" is an especially sharp, hard-hitting slam on Cohen's patended "I Am Too Deep" stance. But Cohen is not an ordinary Aritst, a non-Andy Warhol. He's an actual, living Poet. The Real Deal. So, what is behind Leonard losing all his money?
Robert Graves, who wrote "The White Goddess", says that the Poet will be punished if he sells his poems -- unless he spends the proceeds on trivial and luxury items. I can sympathise with those who wish it were different (and I am a small-time criminal in this regard) but it seems Graves may have had a point.
Poetry, like Faith and Innocence, maybe shouldn't be bought and sold. Maybe there are forces behind (or within) these Things that are testy and sensitive. We could be seeing, in our time, a man fulfilling to-the-letter the complete Tarot; the looping of the Uroburos; the Hero Quest started, finished, and started again.
I am more in love with my Hero, Cohen, today, then I have ever been. If he can come out of this with at least one great song -- something that will shatter what we Know of Leo already, he will only be greater.
Cut the strings, Leonard! The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Maybe the Goddess does punish the Poet who peddles his productions. Yet everyone loves to make a hit record; and you are a Genius that actually deserves it.

Welcome Love's Bastard. Please go tell the Goddess that he just gave the world countless treasures and received a fair little something for this in return. Can she please get it back to him?
