Guns

Post by Paula »

This is just a general question. I was speaking to someone from Solvacia and I was horrified to realise that Britain might be the only country in the world where the police are not armed. Surely there must be some countries out there where the police do not carry guns?

Here they have a gun on a side, and a stick on the other. And they had cayenne pepper, but cayenne pepper was very controversial, I do not know if they are still using it.

I think that some guns are loaded "only" with projectiles made of caoutchouc.

They have teargas, smoke grenades, firemen hoses. What else?

Boots.

As for the roses, Madam, please accept those (virtual) from me, because they certainly are not the flower power style, the policepersons, here.

I always thought they had the guns to threaten us...

I feel less secure where there's more "security".

The police in the U.K. are not as "unarmed" as they used to be. Judging by this article in the bbc news, 11th Dec. 2004, no one, and nothing is safe.

Rob I can understand your affinity with sheep, you are welsh

The police are armed at certain high profile sites, the airports, Scotland Yard etc. As far as I know the common or garden copper in Britain just carries handcuffs, two way radio and truncheon/stick.

I agree with Tom it would make me very nervous to have armed police.

Our cops have guns over here in Australia too.

Um...where is Solvacia...?

I had to ask that Insanitor. Apparently it is between Austria, Germany and somewhere else. I thought it it was part of the old Yugosalvia but then I do have a bad sense of direction.

Solvacia doesn't exist. You mean Slovakia? It's The Slovak Republic, between Germany, Poland, Austria and Hungary, yes, the capital is Bratislava, on the Danube river also, as Vienna and Budapest). With The Czeckh Republic it used to be Chechoslovakia (sorry for speling).
In Yugoslavia were Slovenia (Matjaz's country), Croatia (Jurica's and mine country), Serbia (Nenad's country), Montenegro, Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegowina.

Now, people usually mix Slovenia with Slovakia. The fact that Panonian part of Croatia is called Slavonia doesnt' help either :? But the fact is that the names of both country and that Croatian region comes from the Slavs: Slovenia, Slavonia, Slovakia.

Jurica just came from Bratislava, Slovakia - I expect his full report today. As far I know he met some Canadian girl there who never heard of Leonard Cohen.

Tom - I thought my spelling might be wrong I was spelling it as it sounded.

I think I must have got confused with Slovenia.

Slovakia wasn't a country I had ever heard of.

I know there's a site hosted by Slovenian (or is it was Slovakian?) govermenet explaning it's not the same country, but I can't find it.
Anyway, GW Bush was last week in Bratislava, Slovakia, and it seems that he almost came to Ljubljana, Slovenia by mistake

Slovakia is under title "Thursday" actually... Btw, Croatia is just under Slovenia, on Adriatic Sea.

Igor the guy I was talking to who was from Slovakia mentioned GWB visiting his country. He said they couldn't wait for him to go as they thought his presence there would alert the world to that fact there was a country called Slovakia and it would then become a target for terrorists!

I reassured him. But seeing as GWB got lost it wouldn't be a great suprise if war on the country was declared by mistake. Its a bit worrying that US President doesn't know where countries are.
