Article in Austrian newspaper mentioning and quoting Cohen

An opinion piece in today's "Der Standard" quotes Leonard's "The Future" in connection with the crisis in Crimea:

A translation of the beginning of the article:

GIVE ME BACK THE BERLIN WALL

"The west" reinvents itself with Russia again taking the role of the bogeyman and asserts its moral superiority

"Give me back the Berlin wall," Leonard Cohen sang in the year 1992. The dystopian song "The Future", conjuring up the apocalypse, goes on to say: "Things are gonna slide, slide in all directions (...) Won't be nothing (...) you can measure anymore". 22 years later, one cannot deny Cohen's lyrics a certain political relevance.

Since the outbreak of the Crimean crisis, the Cold War has undegrone a revival : on the one hand as a specter, often raised with the refrain of "hopefully never again ...", on the other, as an option, that can, given recent events, be not dismissed entirely. Before 1989, the competitive systems had brought a certain predictability and stability. Against the backdrop of a sudden rush of events, a balance of terror would be preferable to an impending escalation.

Of course, a resurgence of the Cold War is neither feasible nor desirable, and yet many Western media and politicians are in the middle in such a resurgence. The media-fueled unease , in other words "Russia -bashing ", is experiencing a new golden age, which hasn't been the case in such a unilateral way for a long time. Russia is often conviniently used as a projection which allows "the West" to celebrate its own moral superiority. Facts play a subordinate role.
