sad songs
Signed in to respond to a powerful song you posted, Steven, but you've taken it down. Had never heard that before.
Here's one from Jackie Leven, (not so good as the one you put up though) about a similar despair:

(better minimised onscreen as video doesn't really fit)

Re: sad songs
Dear Diane,
Yes, took it down as I thought it might be too sad a song. Came back to post a song that is not as sad
(at least I think it isn't as sad) by the same extraordinary artist. Here is the link to it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXXPjYa1 ... re=related. Will listen to the link you posted
later tonight.
Everyone,
The link I took down was to the Mickey Newbury song "Nights When I Am Sane." It's extremely sad.

Re: sad songs
No probs:-) I don't think a song can be 'too' sad. After all, there is no limit to the amount of sadness (or joy) life is capable at throwing at us! It's great when someone can articulate those times when you just can't stand it.
Re: sad songs
I have always enjoyed "Thirty-third of August" by Mickey Newbury.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4U6Nz0wdMM
but I think "Boulder to Birmingham" by Scott Walker is a very sad song. Originally by Emmylou Harris it has a history.

DIfferent emotions from the songs but both extremely sad.

Re: sad songs
Hello Tony. I have fond memories of meeting you in Hyde Park mud, the day elf and safety pulled the plug:-) I first heard of Mickey Newbury when you mentioned him here a while ago.
Imaginary wrote somewhere that Lullaby is the most comforting LC song. I think it's the perfect response to these tunes.
Hey, Steven, I just saw Merton say you may be leaving your music station. But you're so good at what you do:-( Hope you are moving on to other good things. Ithaka gave you a splendid journey.

Re: sad songs
Thanks for sharing the songs Tony. Yes quite sad but very moving and powerful. Songs like that touch us inside
Re: sad songs
Hi,
The clip that Diane linked to is angry-sad. Anger can result from sadness. Know an old man who has become
combative and is turning on people. His wife is in hospice. Someone with perception observed that he's acting
out of grieving.
Of Tony's two links, like them both, of course.

Re: sad songs
I thought of this thread when I heard Galveston on radio 2 just now:

I hadn't paid attention to that song 'til Greg posted it some time ago. I think it is maybe the saddest song, ever.
I am so afraid of dying
before I dry the tears she's crying
- a soldier on the battlefield who is afraid of dying, not of death itself, but of losing the chance ever to love again, his girl, his home town. You can put yourself in his shoes...
(don't much care for the tune, though...)

Re: sad songs
Diane - I'm glad you mentioned "Galveston". Have you heard (writer) Jimmy Webb's own version of the song? I've always thought this brings out the real sadness in the song:

Re: sad songs
I like emotional songs. Murray, that last one is certainly sad!
I'm actually learning "Galveston" on the violin at the moment

It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to B4real ~ me
Attitude is a self-fulfilling prophecy ~ me ...... The magic of art is the truth of its lies ~ me ...... Only left-handers are in their right mind!

Re: sad songs
I imagine the violin bringing the appropriate melancholy and depth to Galveston, Bev!
Hi John. No I hadn't heard his version, and you're right, his voice brings the appropriate emotion to the song, thanks, enjoyed. Jimmy Webb's Macarthur Park (sung ubiquitously by Donna Summer in my young years) always struck me for the marvellous weirdness of the chorus. However, the song in its entirety is replete with longing, and can be added to the sad list.
Yes, what a haunting song about the WW1 horse, Junk.
Kush the video you posted has been blocked in my country:-(

Re: sad songs
Thanks for the response Bev and Diane.
Glad you liked it. (if you can really like something so sad.)
Here's one you won't have heard before.

An undiscovered genius.
PS: It was the Richard Harris version of MacArthur Park that was big here!
Much better IMHO.
