I say it the way Leonard says it!

At least all three pronounce it correctly, and none of them said "Leonard Cone." ;-)

There is another possibility:

Lee-Oh-naard

Koh-inn

PS: In Israel everyone says his first name like I mentioned above.

The female from the U.S. pronounces the "r" in Leonard more distinctly than the 2 British males - interesting. . .

And thank you for the post, Elizabeelzebubeth (hope I spelled your name right!) - what a great idea, to record people saying Leonard's name - I love it!! I often repeat Leonard's name to myself, either silently or outloud - I just love the sound of it, in whatever way it's pronounced!! And it's lovely to hear different people saying it in their different ways - how very sweet!!

SEADOVE: In the "Lee - Oh - naard" pronunciation, which syllable would be accented?

Please less of the Cowen. There is no comparison between Leonard and our prime minister whose name is Brian Cowen

Unfortunately he STILL is but we will have an election in a couple of months which will hopefully shake things up. Try this for pronouning Cohen. When forming the word make an "O" with your mouth and then the sound will be better than Cowen ;-)

i think that's what i do. i just forgot your native speakers' "cowen" resembles to the "cow". my bad!
that's what happens when a non-native speaker comes around!
so sorry! but at least your incumbent pm is out of this business by now! :-)

To set the record straight...

In Montreal.......... his name would be pronounced "leN..Nerd Ko..hen".......

And he would sometimes have his first name shortened to Len..Knee!

Very personal experience.......thats how my first name was pronounced, growing up in Montreal .......

The pronounciation of Leonard's second name was pretty common......a phonebook full of Ko-hens..... in the largest Jewish community in Canada...125,000 people in our time.

Leonard from Montreal

I heard:

Le-on-hard Koen (Germany) /leon'hardt/
Le-o-nar' Koen (France) /le'onar/

The correct is of course "Lenn-ard" but in Slavic countries you mostly hear "Lee-o-nard" (so not "Len+ard" but "Lee+o+nard", with "y") - so, the same as in Israel, as seadove said. Methinks it's the most common way of saying his first name in Europe.... Also, some people are saying it simply as it is written, as it's usual name in Slavic countries: "Le+o+nard" ("le" is pronounced not like in "lee" but like in eLEphant e.g.).

I believe Toronto now wears that mantle. The Exodus from Montreal began shortly after René Lévesque (Parti Québécois) became the Premier on November 25, 1976.
