This Poem is for a Woman

This is a poem for the woman
Who keeps me waiting
Prodigal with herself
Happiest when she is not
She greets me with a smile that opens my soul
That let’s talk intimately as husband and wife

And I imagine her laying bare her white thighs in the darkness
But I love her body only because it is part of her
A woman still something of a girl
As I am a man who will always be something of a boy
A woman who was born to receive flowers
A flirtatious girl
A girl who loved much too quickly and with all her body
And sometimes hurt herself

When she spread out the wave of her skirt towards me
And let me lift for a time
And we found a few moments of pleasure and of peace
Always there for her taking when she recognizes my touch of love
Happy to be near her
With a load of caresses and soft kisses
Before embracing the marvelous cage that holds her emotions

I want t wrap myself in her smile
If her guarded heart would finally open
For at least one night
And she stretches her naked arms out
And She stretches out her body
With fluid calm movements
And invites a dance that may free her to see me whole
And as she does all these things she, will be “herself”
It may last if G-d is truly vast

When I listen in the street
To words uttered by someone passing by
To another woman whose heart bursting
My thoughts go always
To this almost-ready woman
Who has come to me wither mind
Intent on life with good sense
Who has that particular flame to offer me
A fire to give life warmth
a fire to make life listen

This lovely seeking woman comes towards me
Moving with the slowness of a leaf
With the flame that warms the blood
And brightens my sore eyes
Winter is here outside and here in me
But tonight before sleep
Let the image of what-can-be appear
Making more and more waves
I need all of her powerful memories
And I need to make new ones
That will be indelible as all the rest
