I Know You Are Not My Lover
I know you are not my lover
but I still recklessly pursue you.
I promise I will try to recover
some sense of what assures you.
I know you are not my lover
but yet I will offer up my hand.
In it are many things to discover;
comfort perhaps, but no demands
I know you are not my lover,
the past we shared haunts me still.
You are now wedded to another
who compels you to bend to his will.
Let us endorse a merger of the spirit,
let us elaborate on what holds us here.
If you are willing, you will surely hear it,
my wrecked voice despairing with fear.
I Know You Are Not My Lover

Wow, thanks for this poem. When I read it it made me think of Lou Reed's lyric for "Pale Blue Eyes." The idea of pursuing someone who is married is a bit different from "Pale Blue Eyes" but has similar sentiments.
The last stanza is what drives this poem home. It is very strong and shows just how much the narrator wishes to connect to the one he/she wishes to connect with.
What I love about reading poems here is that Leonard Cohen has had a definite literary influence. It is excellent. He is one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century.

very nice poem...thank you, J. for sharing it...
Love... Marriage...Restrictions...
many people are passing through...and it's tough for everyone who experienced it...may be it's a kind of Karma...who knows?...
it's not easy, but writing can calm your soul for a while...
warm regards,
Iubita
