Austin City Limits

Post by lollygagger »

I`ve liked LC`s music since I first heard it on LP many years ago (Songs of Love And Hate) I listen to a lot of music and over the years, I really hadn`t paid much attention to his "new" stuff (circa 1980`s and later).

I guess I`m like a lot of people who see that ACL broadcast and get BLOWN AWAY. I`ve taped it and shown it to literally dozens of house guests and the response is almost always the same: WHO is this amazing artist and WHERE can I get a proper DVD of that performance. To which I must reply that the questioner tape it off PBS themselves.

Several months ago, I contacted the people at PBS and Austin City Limits. They have no rights to the show as far as producing a DVD goes. Leonard`s mgmt. gave me no reply. Perla Batella and Julie Christenson gave me no reply from their respective web sites (hah! a long shot I know) This performance is like the entry drug for neophyte LC fans. DVD is the way to reach a massive audience that hasn`t been exposed to his art.

Frustrating as all get out. Of course, I want a copy myself... it`s a transcendent performance. I understand that he did two for ACL within a short period of time. THey could be combinded I suppose.

But noone seems all that interested. It`s probably a rights/legal issue that is unresolvable for some reason. In my humble opinion, it should be preserved for posterity. I don`t want to read about how the master tape got damaged and that it is gone forever.

within weeks of the ACL rebroadcast last year, I contacted A&E's Breakfast With the Arts program and asked them to contact Leonard's agent..... the email answer was something to the effect that Leonard has not been doing any new programs lately, implying they won't replay old stuff.
May be with DEAR HEATHER album there will be some interest again... I'll repeat my suggestion to A&E...

Many of us would love to have a DVD with both broadcasts or any combination of video programs...
Life is the final riddle, we all give up on it eventually...

I agree, any DVD of Leonard Cohen performances would be welcomed... Throw in the music videos, some interviews, etc. More older artists should put out DVDs or at least just put them out in a small number for their fanbase.
