Favourite LC Album

Post by chrisbarratt »

What's you favourite LC album?
I do have a preference for the earlier acoustic stuff - his guitar playing is vastly underated. That's not to say I don't love the newer material, indeed his last 3 studio are superb.
My personal favourite has to be Songs Of LC, the first 8 tracks are perfection. I love the playing and the production as well as the songs. All the tracks have something added to the atmsophere of the track within the production, the little touchs of accompaniment such as backing vocals (Suzanne) or instrumental effects (Stories Of The Street, Master Song, Sisters Of Mercy) for me turn genius into magic!
Songs from A Room comes a close second, though I feel it is let down by a couple of weaker tracks and a heavier production. Story Of Isaac, The Partisan, Seems so Long Ago, Nancy and Bird On The Wire will always make that indispensable.
I'll always have a soft spot for Greatest Hits as it was my introduction to LC when a friend lent me it in 1991 when I was 17. At the time, I remember being particularly awestruck by the beauty that is Sisters Of Mercy and the eerie genius of The Partisan and Who By Fire. Listening to it now, though, I can't help wondering why Lady Midnight was on there when "..Nancy" or "..Isaac" would have made far better choices.

Hi Chris,
No one seems to be answering your Post, perhaps because this topic surfaces in different ways, ongoing. So, maybe no one is feeling like repeating themselves right now, or something along that line. I won't be much more help.....as I can't point to a favourite album of Leonard's. However, I like what you said as to your own reasons. I hope you get some other responses here, but don't give up, regardless.....join in elsewhere :D.

Hi Chris
you must know that it is difficult choice... but my will vary between Songs Of Leonard Cohen, Various Positions and Ten New Songs. And I'm Your Man and Death Of A Ladies' Man would be very close. And Recent Songs also :) That's because I like how Leonard changes thru years. I think that I don' like only Songs From A Room, although there are great songs like Bunch Of Lonesome Heroes and The Partisan.
I try to choose record which is compatible and without any excess. But on Recent Songs there is Un Canadien Errant, on Death Of A Ladies' Man there is Fingerprints, on The Future there is Anthem, on I'm Your Man there is Jazz Police which I started to like after I heard live versions.
My favourite are actually live recordings. Field Commander Cohen would go on the top, then, if I can vote for it.
It seems that you're captured by early works. I know that there are people who don't like LC's late works. But I am born in 1979, so I had to discover him late, when he was in monastery.
Regards, Tom

Will,
Songs From a room, definitely... I never listen to that, and songs I like I can hear on live albums, best of, or bootlegs...
It would be interested to find the worst song! Just don't please tell Jazz Police!

I love both his old and his new stuff, but I think his voice is more powerful now than it was on the earlier albums...

Some of my favorites are The Future, I'm Your Man, Songs of love and hate and Songs of Leonard Cohen...

I think they're all great.

I too love Songs From A Room. It is full of a certain kind of simplicity which is very beautiful. I always imagine a room full of darkness and shadows. And the music is finding its way through the open window where there are some lonely pedestrians who are catching some tunes.

Hi Frankie, and welcome. What a lovely image you have found for the way Leonard's music has drifted out into the world and touched the lives of those passing by.

This is another vote for Songs From a Room - as a favourite, that is. I find it difficult to say which of LC's albums is best, but I don't think that there is one weak song on SFAR. It is also the one I always go back to time and time again, which must mean something...
