I hadn't heard of that song until I heard Leonard's version and of course I like it more than the original. Leonard sings it in this unique subtle way which -as always- gives room to the words to show. It sounds a lot different than the original to my ears.

Oh tangle of matter and ghost
Oh darling of angels, demons and saints
And the whole broken-hearted host
Gentle this soul..."

And another gem of a cover I love - Leonard sings Irving Berlin - "Always"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4sdWwpcB3wThe days may not be fair, always
Yeah but that's when I'll be there, always
Not for just a second, or a minute, or an hour,
Not for just a weekend and a shake down in the shower,
Not for just the summer and the winter going sour,
But always, always, always
Re: Leonard sings a Bee Gees song
The song was written with the intent of Otis Redding singing it, but unfortunately died before that happened. Of course, it's been covered by a lot of great singers since then.
I've always respected them as singers and songwriters, because their harmonies were always perfect, they could go on a morning radio show and deliver with just their voices and an acoustic, and I think from the time of moving to England to their last CD, with the exception of "Sgt Pepper" soundtrack wrote all their own songs. Which was a shame, because it also became a setback for Frampton, who I consider a great guitarist, but not a big fan of his songs.
It's easier to tolerate the disco stuff now than it was when it was on the radio every 5 minutes. But the Bee Gees from 67-69 is pretty decent, although "Odessa" is kind of a hit and miss concept album with good songs.
