I went to the opening night at the Green Note Cafe on Wednesday, and Michael and Bridget gave superb performances to a full house.
There is a newly announced gig for Bridget & Michael on Tues 20 April, 8pm, Sanctuary Cafe, 51-55 Brunswick St East, Hove, 01273 770002. Tickets £10, £9 advance resident / rounder records; http://www.wegottickets.com; or contact paulandashley@ntlworld.com
I've requested "Passing Through" for this, but it remains to be seen whether they actually play it!

Re: Bridget St John & Michael Chapman Tour
Hi John,
Am going to see them in Cornwall on the 18th April, will let you know if they play Passing Through then. I'm looking forward to it a lot (don@t get that many passing players down here). Last time I saw Bridget was a long time ago at the Roundhouse, so will let you know how is goes,
Regards,
Maureen

Hi Maureen,
When I spoke to Bridget at Green Note, she said (rather doubtfully) that she would have to try and remember the arrangement for "Passing Through". Heving just purchased "Thank You For..." on CD, I heard her version again for the first time in years, and I'm actually not too keen on this arrangement of the song. Nonetheless, I guarantee that you'll have a wonderful time, whatever she plays. In my opinion, she's much better live now than she was then, and radiates serenity and beauty. It's totally amazing that one can see two such underrated artists as Bridget and Michael for a mere tenner! Bridget's double BBC Sessions CD is released this month, and it's the holy grail for Bridget fans. The first CD is the better quality, but the second CD featuring early John Peel sessions (with Peel's intros) is wonderfully nostalgic, and a real piece of time-warp. The absolute highlight of the album is the totally sublime "Leaves of Lime" which I'd only ever heard once before.
All good things, John E

Re: Bridget St John & Michael Chapman Tour
Hi John,
Well last night was wonderful, thouroughly enjoyed it, was just in a small village hall. The years just fell away. I wasn't too familiar with Michael Chapman, but think that he's a great and inventive musician! After his set was wondering how him and Bridget would be together, it was perfect! Chatted to Bridget for a while after and she told me it was in 1969 that I'd seen her last, at the Roundhouse with Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt for a CND gig!! I knew from my husband that it had been before 1970 because he had never seen her. Where do the years go eh! I really appreciated the fact that they are touring and playing in small far flung places too!
Oh, they didn't play Passing Through, maybe you'll get to hear it on Tuesday. The one I really liked for the arrangement, was their version of Buffy St Maries, Lazarus. Have you heard them do it?
Enjoy,
Maureen

Re: Bridget St John & Michael Chapman Tour
Hi Maureen,
Bridget and Michael's gig on Tuesday took place in a small "Cousin's style" folk-cellar in Brighton. I was there selling CDs for them, as I tent to do when I attend one of their shows. In Brighton they reversed their usual order of appearance, so that Bridget played first. The audience listened in awed silence, and Bridget commented that it was "so quiet that it's almost holy!". I loved Bridget's version of Michael's "Rabbit Hills" on hearing it for the second time(she's only started playing this recently). They played "Lazarus" together, and it was great. Although Bridget always does a fine version of this, I think this is the first time I've heard the two of them play it together. If you want the best introduction to Michael on CD, I would recommend his masterpiece "Fully Qualified Survivor" (which you can buy as a double with "Rainmaker"). For the newer songs, I recommend the Black & White album (see michaelchapman.co.uk).
