Leonard Cohen's Art Exhibition in California

Post by bridger15 »

Magnificent! Like all of his endeavours.

It is said that anticipation heightens realization. So, I scheduled a visit to Leonard's Art exhibition at Claremont College, about 50 miles east of Los Angeles, prior to attending his two concerts in San Diego and Los Angeles next week. Now, here I am writing this posting while listening to the CBC Radio 2 broadcast of the London Live CD. Gosh, life is good.

I was lucky to be the only one at the exhibition and could take my time to enjoy each individual drawing. To me, Leonard’s art is funny, poignant, erotic and spiritual.

My particular favorite was the one of himself reading poems to Canadian Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau, who I feel was the greatest PM Canada ever had. The drawing included an excerpt from the “Book of Longing”. At a friend's rooftop gathering, Trudeau asked Leonard to read a poem and when he finished, to read another poem and another. As a transplanted Canadian now living in L.A., I found the drawing of Canada’s two greatest National treasures very moving.

Leonard Cohen's drawings are awesome.

The exhibit is wonderful. I unfortunately was unable to make it to any of Phillip Glass' Book of Longing performances at the Colleges a month or two ago due to some prior engagements :(

This is definately worth another look tomorrow before the L.A. concert on Saturday.
Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win...

I plan on making a second visit to Claremont College, about 50 miles east of Los Angeles, to see the Leonard Cohen exhibition of drawings again. I called to see how long the exhibition will be on. Definitely until May15. After that, they are not sure.

If you are in the area and haven't seen the exhibition yet, I highly recommend you go.
Spanning over 40 years, the exhibit highlights selected art from the drawings and journals of Cohen and reflects his life-long love of drawing. All images are produced with permanent pigmented ink on 300 lb. Arches watercolor paper, finished with a hand-deckled edge. For each print, Cohen has signed, titled, numbered and dated, and embossed and stamped with his official seal. More than 50 pieces of artwork will be featured.

....The exhibition is open to the public and can be viewed from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, 385 E. Eighth Street, Claremont, Calif. The Athenaeum may be closed to the public on holidays and for scheduled events.

For more information about viewing times, call 909-621-8244
One of the drawings in the exhibition (with LC's signature) is reproduced on the tote bag that is on sale as part of the tour merch.

I bought a tote bag in San Diego and will have it framed – it’s the closest I will get to owning a signed drawing by Leonard Cohen.

bridger15,

Thank you so much for posting the link to his artwork!

These are glorious! I love the vibrancy of his colors. He does not seem to see himself for the handsome man he is. What he accomplishes with his spare use of lines is incredible! Wish I could view them in person  .

Best regards,
Mary
