That copyright thing is very aggravating!

Damellon,

Sorry that it is aggravating you. I'm carrying forth something I learned from not
retaining rights elsewhere. Not doing so resulted in time and effort to
secure reprint rights. In one case, the original was a mass circulation newspaper.
In another, it was a special interest publication. Not to imply anyone caring about
this or other poetry I might post. No aggravation intended.

Sideways,

Don't be embarrased or feel pretentious for me. It's fine; I can handle it. :D
By the way, the movie "Sideways" is one that I enjoyed.

But Steven......
And this may be naive
Is a newspaper likely to lift anything from here for unauthorised publication?
And if it did, isn't your publication here sufficient record for an assertion of authorship?
There must be others here who hope for eventual publication, but don't append such a legal safety-net.
It makes you look a bit precious. But if you need to, you need to.
In this case, since you're flying without a parachute, I can assure you I will not plagiarise any of your above response. :)
Cheers

I don't mind the assertion. But I am curious how you learned that your work had been usurped.

Fear not, Steven, I think you're safe enough with that piece.

Hi Damellon,

I'm not an attorney, nor currently a "professional" writer or pro-poet (such
people are very rare). So, my picadillo with the copyright is just that and
is fueled by prior experience in working through reprint rights. Can't say
that it is reasonable or prudent, but thought it innocuous enough of a
gesture to make it a habit. :) There are commonlaw copyright protections
and additional protections provided for by a copyright notice. The latter provide
prescribed additional compensation for violation as well a "criminalizing" of
offenses. -- Again, I'm not an attorney. This is my personal understanding only
and not advice to anyone. I don't think a newspaper is likely to lift my work;
I've seen some quality poems here that are, i.m.o., worthy of publication elsewhere.
I can't give an informed comment about "sufficient record." Take care.

Edited twice for grammar and spelling. Any other errors can stay where they are.

Not sure what it's called where you are (where are you? attorney = USA, picadillo = Latin America) but here we have a tool called a plunger (stick thingy with a rubber head on it) which is an effective unblocker, whether one's a writer or not.

Hi Damellon,

Good word based sleuthing. I'm in the U.S.A. I'm aware of armadillos in
Latin America and southern U.S.A., but don't know what "picadillo" is ouside
of its usage to indicate an eccentricity. The plunger can be a helpful metaphor,
yes.

coffee helps when I have a blockage. so do sugar free cough drops. normal cough drops don't do it - only the sugar free ones.

My sister sent this little Darwin Award-type story to me today:
Zookeeper Friedrich Riesfeldt (Paderborn, Germany) fed his constipated elephant 22 doses of an animal laxative and more than a bushel of berries, figs and prunes, before the plugged-up pachyderm finally got relief. Investigators say ill-fated Friedrich, 46, was attempting to give the ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the beast suddenly unloaded. The sheer force of the elephant's unexpected defecation knocked Mr. Riesfeldt to the ground where he struck his head on a rock as the elephant continued to evacuate 200 pounds of dung on top of him. It seems to be just one of those freak accidents that once again proves..."Sh*t happens!"
