Why keep a record of living for nothing?
"You're living for nothing now. I hope you're keeping some kind of
record."

1. "FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT" -- Songs Of Love And Hate; The Best Of
Leonard Cohen; The Essential Leonard Cohen; Stranger Music (minor
modifications between versions)
...house deep in the desert. You're living for nothing now. I hope
you're keeping some kind of record. Yes, and Jane came by with a lock
of your hair. She said that you gave it to her the night...

Heyjudah,

For a writer, the opportunity to write when supposedly otherwise not
encumbered by things, represents an opportunity to record material of
real worth. This could have been Leonard's perspective as he was/is a writer.
It's a questionable opportunity, though, but I think this was the gist of that wonderful
quote you provided.

Forgive me but:

DUH?

To me it's pretty obvious. But Then again, you are not me.
I, which is who I am, should go to bed before I fall asleep at the desk here.
Good night.
Now you've got the gist of what my lettuce meant.
