What I've witnessed, here in North America, is the song moving from hallowed cult status to populist favourite in the wake of its inclusion in the movie "Shrek". The version heard in the movie itself, of course, being John Cale's, and, on the movie soundtrack, the version by Rufus Wainwright.
Thanks to "Shrek", "Hallelujah" is now, even, becoming a standard song for school choirs and bands - at, both, secular learning institutions and those with religious affiliations.

p.s. in further evidence of the mass reach and mainstream appeal the song now holds, "Hallelujah" is getting broad media coverage in this country right now, as it's the song of choice performed by a finalist in the "Canadian Idol" tv contest

aye, well, by roots - my Mother's Irish, and her family - going back generations in places I've yet to visit... around Galway is as much as I know - my eldest brother knows the details, and when I get there, I shall make a point of knowing!
I know only a very little Gaelic, but, what I do, I use when I can ( :

And, it turns out, the fellow who sang (part of?) Hallelujah was named "Canadian Idol" - according to media and blog reports, thanks in large part to Leonard's song. I've never seen the show - and the video 3# on the page linked @ http://www.idolstalker.com/canadian-ido ... elo-video/ comes as a surprise, for there is only a portion of the song performed. Maybe that's all they do - or else this is an edited clip. Whatever the case, it sounds like Hallelujah has much to do with this singer moving the audience and judges of this pop idol contest. Truly, the song is embraced by a mass audience!

Truly, I say to you, this song is the Son of Mod!

Truly, I say to you, this song is the Adopted Son of Mod
. It has all the hallmarks of a classic and it's already make its mark across the world in that way.

Whose Mod?
"Bipolar is a roller-coaster ride without a seat belt. One day you're flying with the fireworks; for the next month you're being scraped off the trolley" I said that.

I interpreted "Mod" as the "Mod"ern trend/taste in music vs. a masterpiece that will stand the test of time.

I interpreted it as a shortened form of Moder Teresa

RP, you almost certainly need to call on the support of St Dymphna. One of your own and just right for you.

St Dymphna was the woman to drive the people mad,
she helped them lose whatever were the last few wits they had.
But in the end they took her and locked her in a cell
and I think, perhaps, in hindsight that was just as well!

It's definitely becoming very popular, and I do enjoy it, although I still prefer
Dance Me To The End Of Love.
The daughter of a friend of mine in Ireland got married this summer and the bride
and groom each had 1/2 of a line from Hallelujah engraved inside their wedding
bands. Unfortunately, I can't remember which line it was. Their preferred version
is the Jeff Buckley version and they gave me a copy of his CD, which I had never had
the pleasure of listening to before.
