leonard cohen mentioned in john irving's "until i find you"

Post by echoes »

Hi!

This is no great news, I know, but somehing that made me smile: I've just read "until I find you" by John Irving. Bob Dylan is mentioned all the time, a lot of his songs are quoted. I thought, that Leonard Cohen would have had some fitting songs for that book, too. Then halfway through the book Leonard Cohen is mentioned, too - someone in the story played "If it be your will" on a church organ. Nice to have them both in that novel, even Johnny Cash had his small appearance. :D

Now THAT was one of the most frustrating, over-written novels I have EVER read.

I second that. Socrates said that the unexamined life is not worth living but there can be such a thing as too much examination. Irving writes his longest book (as if Owen Meany wasn’t long enough) about himself.

Hi Manuel ~

It's been a long time since you've been around. Good to see you here :D . I can see why you'd anticipate Leonard's appearance and be glad when it finally arrived. Good choice of song, too, eh? Were the lyrics written out on the page, or did Irving just mention the song by name? How was Johnny Cash included?

Sorry Manuel, :( it seems rude now to bag the book you have just read. You didn't say if you liked it or not. Was it translated or did you wade through it in English?

Hi!

It is a difficult book and I "waded through in English" as you said. It took awfully long to read it ... so I don't really liked it... It got better on the second half though - not because of Leonard's name mentioned, at least not only , there was more of Irving's humour, which I like (I love "Hotel New Hampshire"! :D ).

Johnny Cash was merely mentioned as was Leonard, somewhere a song was playing. There were no lyrics to "if it be your will", just the song mentioned.
