I'm looking forward to reading that report about Anjani, as well as Leonard, in Paris from whomever it may come.

Multilingual as well Poppy (your command of smilies has me swooning  ), and the surprises keep coming, who will report from Paris?

I'm interested to hear a report of Anjani's concert in Paris. I hoped to make it ,and even bought a return Eurostar ticket . However, due to problems with the person who offered to put me up there and other issues at home, I couldn't make it. I asked Leonard if he would be appearing with Anjani on the tour on Sunday, but he said he wouldn't and would be flying straight back.

I just think Anjani should get credit as a singer in her own right and not be seen as a 'hanger-oner' to LC.

Yes, exactly, Osmachar. I feel the same way. The more people are going to see Anjani perform, the more that very thing is happening. When you watch her, you see that this is her own, pure skill... nothing electronic going on to make her sound better and the nuances she brings to music and her voice are her own. She's wonderful.

I really felt it was her own concert. Even when Leonard was on stage with her, she seemed to be the boss. She made him enter in her world and not the opposite. That was really funny to see her managing the situation. Of course our man maybe brought a little more emotion to all the fans here (after 14 years in Paris), but I think she lives the situation with kindness and generosity. Will someone help me by reporting this event ?

So far you're doing fine, Patyou. Just keep going with it. There are some people here from France, but proportionately, not so many and fewer still who participate. Maybe this will bring some of them out onto the pages. Meanwhile, I know what you're saying about how Leonard and Anjani dovetail on stage. He has no desire or inclination to compete with her. He wants her to be accepted and embraced for who she is and what she brings on her own to his songs. She brings a lot 8) , as I know you saw :D .

Yes, it's natural that the audience is going to be so openly appreciative of Leonard's presence. For one thing, some didn't know whether or not to expect it; and others had accepted that he wouldn't be there. So, with all of the loyalty that the years have brought him, his appearance [anticipated or otherwise] will always generate an explosion of excitement. Both of them are aware of that and gracious in their acceptance of it and it shows 8) .

But the songs are not entirely hers - that is one difference

Yes, Red Poppy, of course they're not hers; but that has nothing to do with Anjani's skills and abilities as a singer, composer, and arranger. She creates sublime melodies and arrangements and her vocals are equally sublime. Leonard's lyrics are incredible; yet, even there, she assisted with some. Even if she hadn't, though, her singing Leonard's lyrics doesn't undermine who and what she is as an artist. Even if she wrote every word, there will always be differences between artists. She remains an extremely skilled and talented one.

I've started looking more closely at the lyrics she's written by herself and I love them. Unlike the majority of Leonard's, they are pretty straightforward. So far, they are revealing a lovely person who is grateful for what life brings her and doesn't feel the world owes her anything. She isn't caught up in formula writing, her lyrics are intelligent, sensitive, and interesting, and she doesn't rely on meaningless repetition. Her songwriting is substantive, and I'm looking forward to her contributions on their upcoming album. When he decided on collaboration, he made an intelligent and sound decision rather than, as some would have it, an irrational, emotionally-based, just-because one of having his romantic partner record with him.

I've had the two earlier albums, Anjani and The Sacred Names, for quite a long time and while some the tracks on the latter are interesting I really wouldn't agree, Lizzy, that Anjani's songwriting is in any way substantive. Competent yes but no more than a thousand other songwriters.

We can disagree and we do. I guess she still has to prove herself to you. The way it comes across is that unless she's a second [female] Leonard Cohen in virtually-to-literally every aspect, she's dismissable. That's a danger of finding yourself in the floodlight projected on our greatest. My guess is that she'd choose enduring whatever criticism comes her away over moving away from the brilliance within the inner circle. There are literally thousands who would happily be willing to take her place; however, they don't meet Leonard's own standards for standing in that spot.
