Brothers In Arms

Post by jerry »

Brothers In Arms

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

Mark Knopfler

Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash.

I've got a mate who says that Dire Straits would of been a much more commercially successful band if Mark Knoffler wasn't vocalist, I personally can't imagine the band any other way, and thank you for the reminder of the lyrics Jerry.

Dear Jerry,

I remember listening to this song as a 16 year old girl, driving in my fathers car through empty streets in Croatia. It still makes me sad.

Welcome to the Forum, Katarina :D .

Have you been around here observing long enough to know that Croatia is being discussed as a possibility for the 2010 Leonard Cohen Event? Tom Sakic and Jurica and some others might end up needing some of your help... though it may need to come via Germany, according to your location :D I had NO idea your country of Croatia was so beautiful until Tom showed us some pictures! Or, are you actually from Germany, but in Croatia at the moment? I just realized that I may have reversed all of that.

Welcome, anyway :) !

Dear Lizzy,

thank you for your very warm welcome !
Somehow, Iam suprised of so much warmth I could literally feel through these distances and foreigness.

Iam from Croatia, Dalmatia and please believe Tom and Jurica and me its one of the most beautiful places on earth.
(Hydra is not far away, you should visit Croatia anyway this year ! )

Thank you !

Brother in arms is nice and at the same time a sad song.Remember years ago i saw a video with this song that showed streets in Israel with soldiers walking in the streets with guns,an old man sitting on the pavement, blown up military vehicles. But i guess it could have been filmed any where.
To see and hear Mark Knopfler use his gitar is just incredible.

 It's funny you should say that, Katarina... for I was thinking the very same thing as soon as you said Hydra is not far away... except I had you jumping on a fast boat over to join us :D !!!

My time, unfortunately, is locked into place with flight times and days to be spent... I would love to visit Croatia this year; yet, I'm really going beyond myself to do all that I am doing. It's all the greater reason to campaign on behalf of Croatia for the 2010 Event, though. The photos were phenomenal 8) ... and it's apparently very magical at one ancient end of it.

I hope you'll give serious thought to joining us this year, instead. I have a feeling it could be more do-able for you than for me :( . I'm seriously hoping for 2010!

Yes, it's amazing how much in the way of feelings can come through in the printed word, isn't it :) ?

All of this verse is moving; yet, even moreso its last four lines. If only we could gaze at our palms, instead of down the barrel of a gun.

Dear Philwilli,

I even like Mark Knopflers voice, specifically in this song.

Dear Lizzy, Iam seriously thinking about joining this meetup. Its just, that I dont know any members and would it be strange for me ? :D Jarkko said "No, it takes a minute to find friends". That was cute.
So, I guess I will see you in Hydra

Hi Katarina ~

Well, Jarkko is absolutely right. Now, you can quit seriously thinking about it; and begin conclusively thinking about it and making your plans 8) . I wish I'd had the financial and other wherewithal to have attended the official, Leonard Cohen Event on Hydra, which happened very soon after I joined this Forum. However, the time element and funding made it totally out of the question and I was still hopelessly adverse to large gatherings. I still have to deal with that factor in my own way, but at least I go. It won't be strange for you.

What days are you planning to attend? I look forward to meeting you.
