"Other artists on Leonard" - testimonials needed
Lizzy,
before I get hanged, drawn and quartered by my compatriots - let me rush to reassure you that the Red Poppy is not the national symbol of Ireland. Nor indeed is the four leafed clover. In fact the flower to which we pledge our horticultural allegiance is the (three-leafed) shamrock.
And that line above about casting the first stone reminds me of a remark I read once about some reviwer who"left no turn unstoned" in his summation of the acts in some concert. Which reminds me of a one line review I read in the Irish Times of a film called The Snow Leoprard. The review (genuinely) read: "Good in spots."
Happy Christmas to all and to all a goodnight!

I'm loving these testimonials from other artists and am glad to see some response to the Joni Mitchell quote, but I'm still a bit bothered by it. Sorry to get off of the subject of well-deserved glowing remarks about LC but wondered if anyone had looked into Camus and Lorca to see what she meant.
Hallelujah!!!
Hi Red Poppy ~
Well, see what happens when I go to Wikipedia/Google? It was in one of the links... maybe yes, maybe no re: Wiki... but it was one of the links I actually checked for info.
Oh, yes, of course... the shamrock... not sure the difference between shamrock and clover, but believe there is one.
I've heard the "no turn unstoned" reference in some other context, but never heard the The Snow Leopard comment
. I like that
. Clever.
Thanks for letting me know... so is your name chosen with regard for the fallen?

Camus, L'Etranger, Cf. Sartre. Lorca: Take This Waltz. What she says proves to me she ain't a poet. A poet knows what Eliot decreed: "Amateur writers make allusions; professional ones steal." Part of the job descrip. Honour thy tradition (or thy error as hidden intention). LC's got lots of traditions. And, she's a little green with envy and a lot of red with embarrassment. A few years ago, her publisher brought out a book and had the nerve to label her pop-music lyrics "poetry." Gads. Gimme a brick!
Aye, it was jes' venom and egolotry, what she says; sadly, her music will always be smudged, a little, for me (because of those sentences. ICK!).

The Poet's Code of Theft
was unknown to me until this site... yet, I feel the same. I'm no BoHo
, so couldn't begin to recognize good poetry from bad, or if at all, really. I only know what touches and moves me, and flows the way that suits me... like favourite rivers. Still, amidst all my poetical ignorance, I never would have considered Joni's songs to be poetry. I still like the way they sound, the things they say, and singing along with them. What she said about Leonard, though, did nothing to his stature; however, for me, it diminished hers. It was gratuitous and unnecessary, other than seeming pointed with a purpose; the purpose to undermine, and it did... her.

I see [hear] the same kind of thing happening here with small communities, where so many of the locals are in the National Guard and go together to Iraq in a single unit. When the unit encounters trouble, a disproportionate number of men and women from a single town are impacted all at one time. It sounds like the numbers where you live were significantly high in themselves. The recognition, even this many years later, is still a healing force for the families. To have their memory obliterated had to be horribly painful for the families left behind.

‘I’d like to shag him but I think that his heart would give out’
Not a bad testimonial from a lovely young lady for a gentleman fast approaching his 73rd. birthday.
Unfortunately I'm not Leonard Cohen so if ever I reach 73 I would be more than happy just to get a smile now and again from the young ladies:-)

The comment's hilarious; and, the quiz iz a woohoot! I was so worried I'd blow it; but, I didn't! Yay. I am feeling like a million Buicks, braggadocio sashay-sway swaggadocio division, eh? It rally made my day, thanks for not being greedy that way.
Lookin' good. Feelin' grand.
When it comes to knowin' Cohen,
there are still a few brain cells in command.

Pfft! Piece o' cakewalk. Pas de sweat. 'Course, there's only one question that's remotely difficult; but, I take my Tens where I find 'em.
Who am I to look a gift house in the mouth?

One of my favourite quotes regarding Leonard Cohen’s music is the late John Peel saying on his Top Gear programme in the late 60’s that Leonard’s LP’s should be given out with school milk.
A bit dated (school milk !!,LP’s, Top Gear and sadly John Peel),and I can’t find any other references to the quote but it struck a chord with me.
Ps I’m Your Man is showing at FACT cinema Liverpool from Thursday 8th.Feb

That one's a keeper
, David E., and especially so, if it's hard to find... the 'datedness' makes it even better ~ brings back memories and validation from/for a whole generation, as well as country, and by someone who was immensely popular. Have to wonder how different the world could be, if we'd all been listening to LC on LP from that age... in school, even better, as we'd have been discussing him, as well.
Great quote! I hope they use it.
