Judy gets it partly right?

Post by Andrew (Darby) »

It was great to see Judy Collins (who is currently touring Oz) interviewed on our main ABC TV current affairs show tonight. :D

What was even more amazing was her incisiveness and alacrity of response when the interviewer asked her to capture in a word or two what some significant singer-songwriters meant to her. 8) This segment went roughly as follows:

Interviewer: Bob Dylan
Judy: Consciousness changing

Interviewer: Leonard Cohen
Judy: Oh my (face lighting up).....consciousness itself

Interviewer: Joni Mitchell
Judy: Unconsciousness

Very interesting, don't you agree?

Cheers :)

No I don't agree, espeically about Joni Mitchell. Perhaps she feels some sense of rivalry towards a much more prolific and accomplished songwriter. The answer are too pat and don't mean very much like, "Judy Collins. She's pretty. And sad."

Lightning, I did find the Joni comment a little baffling, but I don't think it was a put-down (based on rivalry). :? I'm seeing it more as comment about a different style of musical creativity.

Anyway, I think the LC and BD analyses are pretty accurate, even though perhaps all the comments are a wee bit too "clever" or glib! I also still hold that they are interesting, if for no other reason than that they stimulate some thinking and generate some debate!

Cheers :)

I agree that they are 'pat' and that they are accurate ~ regarding Bob and Leonard. Regarding Joni, the only way I could agree with that would be if she meant that Joni's songs address the 'unconscious'/subconscious in us... other that that, this response was inappropriate and tacky... or, unless, she's making her own comment on Joni's fairly recent comments on Leonard, and comparing herself to Leonard and Bob. Perhaps, this was Judy's way of saying that Joni was out of line in her blustering about all of that.

Elizabeth, I agree totally with your assessment - in fact I should probably have gone with my first instinct, which was just to include the Leonard and Bob comments. Oh well, such is life!

Anyway, I guess I gave Judy the benefit of the doubt concerning Joni, along the lines of your more favourable analysis about the "unconscious/subconscious". :?

Cheers :)

Hi Andrew

I had heard that Judy Collins was gonna be in Australia --been many years since I saw her in Calgary. I still love her music --my husband will never forgive joni for driving by him on the highway in some kind of convertible when he was hitching and not stopping to pick him up. I on the other hand would never dis Joni although I heard one cd at a friend's place recently that just didn't do it for me--I'm ashamed to say that in recent years I have lost track of her.

I saw a different interview with Judy Collins on TV last night. She is coming to New Zealand next week. Leonard wasn't mentioned in this interview, which concentrated more on her personal life, coping mechanisms, and managing her busy lifestyle. Two or three times she would start singing, and completed the interview with singing "Both Sides Now" completely unaccompanied.

Bob, Lenny & Joni... the great triumverate as far as I'm concerned. What was Collins thinking? Beats me.

Just did a workshop on Mind and It's World.
Definition of mind: "that which is clear and aware"
Definition of consciousness: "that which is aware of objects"
Definition of awareness: "that which experiences an object of comprehension"
From web dictionary: consciousness, noun 1.consciousness an alert cognitive state in which you are aware of yourself and your situation; "he lost consciousness"
Yep, I would interpret that as an insult
Judy Blue Eyes, I agree with her assessment of Leonard he is truly conscious and aware and takes us there in his work.

As I’m now not entirely sure that Judy has got it right (about Joni in particular) and as one is unlikely to ever establish its correctness anyway (given it is just a matter of personal opinion and interpretation), I’ve decided to edit my topic title. Hopefully, we (including myself) can now be a bit more comfortable about this item!

Cheers :)

Transcript of the interview with Judy Collins is online at http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2006/s1609555.htm

In my 'umble opion, give me JC over JM any day. A great interpreter of great songs, as JC most certainly is, is a greater blessing than someone obsessed with their own talents. JM certainly wrote some great songs, but then it aint quantity that matters to me. JC's "My Father", for example stands as a towering song every bit as good as anything JM has written.

Sorry, didn't mean to go off blabbing my own opinions and preferences (and that's all they are of course). Only meant to point to the transcript
