Margaret,

I have received the same email and was suspicious too. So I checked their help-pages and this is what I found:
http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/home/Arti ... it_card_en

Authorizing Your Credit Card

We attempt to authorize your credit card when you first place your order - in fact, we can't actually process your order until this authorization is complete. If for some reason your credit card provider does not authorize the charge from us, we'll let you know by sending you an email - typically within 24 hours. Your credit card is never billed until your order, or items in your order, have been processed and shipped.

I guess it's ok then, no?

I PM'd Margaret yesterday about this. I happened to be online when Chapter-Indigo posted in the early hours, so I placed an order. Several hours later I received an email from them asking me to fax an image of my credit card and last bill to them for verification. This seemed irregular, impractical (access to a fax machine), and had issues of security.
Several emails later (and I must say they were very helpful & polite), they accepted a scan in email of the required documents with the middle eight digits blanked out.
They ask for this info, apparently, from all international customers making their first purchase. It will not be asked for if you make any subsequent purchases from them.
I hope this is helpful to anyone considering placing an order.

I'm wondering if we can find out if we [individually] were amongst the 1,000.

I emailed back to them last night saying I was concerned about their request, and whether I was still in time to be in the 1st 1000 orders for a signed copy, .... but as yet have had no reply. But then that may be due to the time difference between here and Canada. If they confirm my pre order was in time I will go ahead with payment, but if not, there is no real advantage in having a copy shipped from Canada when I can get one here in England quite soon.

Still living in hope,
Margaret

Thank you for editing the thread Jarrko. They probably saw that the tribute book would be too big a job. Is this the beginning of a "tour"?
I am patient, but it has been spring for almost 5 days and we still have not heard anything 8)

Willie Nelson is coming to Fredericton May 5, maybe Leonard and Anjani will come here!!!???

How does one know if one is within the first 1000 if one ordered last night, as I did? Where was this offer advertised outside of this forum?

It was posted (and still is) on their own website at
http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/home/Article/leonardcohen
plus it was emailed to their best customers - obviously quite many
because about 25 contributors forwarded it to me yesterday from
15 countries. Looks like Indigo had no idea how fast the news goes
around.

It's too bad that autographs sell better than books. Must be a lot of graphologists out there. Maybe Leonard should just sell autographs. The bookstore should have apprised us when the 1000 limit was reached instead of resorting to lottery sales chicanery to trick us into buying what we did not intend to buy. We all want to read the book and help Leonard regain his financial security but do not like to think we are pre-ordering a signed first edition shipped from afar when we will be getting no such thing. I think we should request the option to cancel if we are not among the first 1000.

Well, there's hope. The notice was sent on Mar 22, 2006 9:16 PM, and my order was confirmed as being received on Mar 23, 2006 9:41 AM ~ so a little over 12 hours later. Hopefully, that puts me well within the 24, during which all 1,000 were spoken for. < [apologies Geoffrey  ]

I was an hour or so over the limit so I requested cancellation. They say you can return the book if they are not able to cancel. Since they are not shipping for quite a while I don't see why they are not able to cancel a pre-order.

In the absence of any reply to my last message yesterday about being within the first 1000, I now assume I was too late, and don't expect to confirm my order by sending the shop a copy of the credit details it wanted. The time difference between Canada and here and when emails are logged makes it difficult to know if I was in time. According to their information my order will lapse if I don't send the verification they want.

Ah well! I am not a collector of autographs, but it would have been a nice bonus to have a signed book rather than a standard one I will still buy anyway from a local source.

Margaret, maybe you could email them that you confirm the order on condition that you get one of the signed copies, and cancel, if you don't.

It is such a classic marketing trick : and doing this on the net for Leonard Cohen stuff, only1000 copies equals to "The first customer to arrive has free ice cream" for, let say, hum, en entrance to the beach during the hottest day of the most beautiful summer the ol' people can remimber.

Now be happy the 1000 first ones around the world, you guys around here just deserve to be into this pack. I wish you luck.

For the others, best luck next time. 8)
