I know that every now and then he goes up Mt. Baldy to consult with his Zen master, Hung Lo, I think his name is. But is ther more to this retreat than meet the eye. Like, how is it that when he appears in public again, he seesm to have less and less hair every time. maybe he has just had a haircut, OK. but perhaps he is seriously losing his roots on top. And this makes him look very old, much older than his great voice would suggest.
I find it very psychologically intersting that he would chose a place called Mt. Baldy. It's like his subconscious has determined this choice for him, perhaps reflecting fears of baldness.

"Hung Lo"!?!?!?
Sheesh --
But seriously, folks... isn't the shaved head a symbol of having been accepted fully into the community of monks? Or is that a stereotype?

If Leonard were going to go bald, he would have done so in his 50's at the latest.
He just wants to wear his hair short. Myself, I found it glorious when it was longer, but I think he is makinghis life simpler as time goes on.
