Plot Summary: Songwriter. Poet. Counter-culture icon. Consummate ladies' man.

Since bursting onto the scene in 1967, Leonard Cohen has inspired generations with his unique personality and haunting music, becoming one of the most original and enduring artists to emerge from the 1960s. Now, Lions Gate is proud to celebrate Cohen's legacy with director Lian Lunson's "Leonard Cohen I'm Your Man," an intimate look at the songs, poetry and life of one of music's most celebrated and influential troubadours.

In January, 2005, Lunson traveled to Sydney to film the historic "Came So Far For Beauty" show, a tribute to Leonard Cohen at the Sydney Opera House organized by famed music producer Hal Willner. "Leonard Cohen I'm Your Man" includes behind-the-scenes interviews and live performances from this event by Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Martha Wainwright, Beth Orton, Linda Thompson, Teddy Thompson, Jarvis Cocker, The Handsome Family, Julie Christensen and Perla Battala, as well as a special performance of "Tower of Song" by Cohen and U2. And in a series of candid interviews, Cohen himself reveals his trademark wry humor and soulful intensity, using his own artwork, poetry and personal collection of photographs to reflect upon his colorful past and his creative process.

So, do theatre engagements rely on reception at the Festivals?

I don't think so. For example, last year Ray, House of Flying Daggers and The Motorcycle Diaries were all shown at the festival; all of them were also shown in major theatres. (In Toronto anyway.) There are well over a hundred movies shown at the festival - some already have big production companies backing them, and I think some are probably showing their films to be picked up by big companies. In the case of Leonard Cohen's movie; a documentary by Lian Lunson - it will probably need a company to pick it up and pay the cost of distribution. So it depends on the movie I think.

Okay, thanks, Katie. That was the jist of my question. I would love to be able to go to a theatre here in the U.S. to see it.

From what I have learnt from working on our festival.....Films like to get their premiers at big festivals, creates a big stir. This would be seen as a World premier, North American, Canadian, Ontario, Toronto premier for some....
If a film has not been picked up by a distributor before the festival this can and hopefully happen at the festival.
Where the film is shown, is in the hands of the distributor. If a distributor has not picked up the film the filmmaker has to hunt for one or is left to seek out screening opportunities for their work.
Docs squeak into theaters, actually Moore's film has opened the doors for docs to go mainstream. Docs have a smaller audience than dramas and comedies unfortunately. If it does not play in a theater near you I am sure it will be available for purchase on DVD. The Atlantic Film festival in Halifax has not announced their line up yet. They extended their submission date this year argh. They will be announcing this on Aug 30 so I will be checking it out to see if our Leonard's film will be there.
Lizzy if we can get it into our festival in November you can come up and stay with me.

Very good, Katie. I hope that's more than rumours.

Yeah, Tri-me. That would be great, wouldn't it!?! I've just been checking Travelocity for going to see my Mom in Michigan, and my niece & nephews in New York [while I'm working and saving for all this world traveling, I need to be taking care of things at home, as well].

Anne ~ If the above is true ~ since you wouldn't 'stalk' him, via his house, on Hydra; will you be 'stalking' him, via him, in Toronto  ? I guess that would be a more 'legitimate' encounter though, eh :D ?

The Festival should get a heftier turnout now, with the Toronto Star article :D . If I were in the area, I wouldn't hesitate to go ~ whether Leonard was attending or not.

Good to hear that he would be in TO for the festival. I would have been suprised if he did not. Hope you get to see him. You can be sure I will be seeing at the first opportunity. Love docs subscribe to The Documentary Film Channel. There is a festival in TO called Hot Docs every spring.

The Festival gets a MASSIVE turnout every year. The amount of star power in this festival is astounding. It's kind of like everyone in Hollywood just sort of migrates north for a couple weeks.

Yep , although Vancouver is called Hollywood North. I wish I were going to the festival. There must be volunteering opportunities? I would volunteer, give me a job and I am more comfortable. When I lived in TO I worked at Toby's Good Eats. There was a filmmaker who did not get his film into the festival. I was a manager in training, so I let him show his film off a high tech monitor thing he had in a quiet part of the restauant. I was fired shortly after this. Hey he was nice and he bought food etc
Leonard's film will be sold out.

 ~ Ah, okay.....Well, it'll be a bit more MASSIVE then. It sounds wonderful, truly. I've heard of it before, and certainly lived 'close enough' at one time. It sounds like "TO" and Vancouver may have a bit of a competition going on there  . One day, I'll make it a point to get to one of the Festivals. Sure wish it could've been this year in Toronto  :D !

 Boy, those restaurant managers/owners ~ no sense of humour, eh, Tri-me?

I am going to see the film.

And it was awfully hard for me to 'stalk' him on Hydra, since he wasn't there! These things happen...

He is welcome to come over and listen to some country music with me if he is in Toronto and finds himself at a loose end. Maybe I would even make him some lentil soup!

I don't think I would make a very good stalker.
