Songs Cohen Could Cover

Post by Cohendrix »

Cohen's a great songwriter, yeah, sure, but he's done some cool covers too.

What other songs could Cohen do? I'm putting in a vote for the Ray Davies (of the Kinks) song "Alcohol" from the Kinks' album _Muswell Hillbillies_. It sounds like a Leonard Cohen song already. It could have been on _Songs of Love and Hate_.

Cohendrix,

One that comes to mind, is "The Highwayman," a poem by Alfred Noyes,
turned into a song by Phil Ochs, many decades after it was penned.

One of killing slow love ballads from Blood Money or Alice, best albums by Tom Waits - Leonard's favourite artist!

He could do a tribute album to Janis Joplin 8)

Summertime,
Child, you’re living easy.
Fish are, fish are jumping out
And the cotton, lord,
Cotton’s high, lord, so high.

Your daddy’s rich,
When your ma, oh honey thinks she’s mighty good-looking, babe.
I said she’s looking pretty fine to me right now,
Don’t you know she is.
Whoa, hush, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby,
No, no, no, no, no, don’t you cry.
Oh honey you’d better not cry
’cause they’re gonna kick you up if when you want to do nothing,
Take it from me!
Cry.

Whoa, one of these mornings,
Child, you’ll rise up singing, baby, oh.
I said you’re gonna wanna go, honey, spread your wings,
Yeah, child, you take, take to the sky,
Lord, the sky.

Until that morning,
Honey, no-no-no-nothing’s going to harm you, babe,
I said honey nothing’s ever gonna let you down,
’cause I just wouldn’t let them do it , no, no, no, no, no,
Hush, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby,
No, no, no, no, no,
Don’t you cry, oh no,
Cry.
Cheers & DLight

Cohen Covers

Post by rayc »

He could easily do a cover of Nick Cave's cover LP kicking against the pricks. The Carnival Is Over etc.
Maybe something from The 1st album by Mull Historical Society?
I do think he could put new life into Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World or Life On Mars.
Candy, I want You or Almost Blue from Elvis Costello
And finally, Surf's Up or God Only Knows from Brian Wilson.
Serioulsy...
Cheers

How about Liars bar by Beautiful South, I love that song. I'm sure he could do good job of that one. When I listen to it I could almost believe that Cohen could have written it 8)

I think Lay Lady Lay (Dillon) would be most appropriate for our Leonard.

And the voice is right, too!

I love the idea of him singing Marianne Faithful I Feel Guilt. He could do Working Class Hero too! Broken English is a classic eh? Lay Lady Lay wow perfect. I don't know the other songs

How about Blind Love by Tom Waits
Now you're gone, and it's hotels and whiskey and sad-luck dames
And I don't care if they miss me, I never remember their names
They say if you get far enough away, you'll be on your way back home
Well, I'm at the station, and I can't get on the train

Must be blind love, only kind of love is stone blind love
Blind love, the only kind of love is stone blind love
With your blind love, oh it's blind love, stone blind love
It's your stone blind love

Now the street's turning blue, the dogs are barking and the night has come
And there's tears that are falling from your blue eyes now
I wonder where you are and I whisper your name
The only way to find you is if I close my eyes

I'll find you with my blind love, the only kind of love is stone blind love
The only kind of love is stone blind love
The only kind of love is stone blind love
With your blind love, oh your blind love, your stone blind love

It's your blind love, the only kind of love is stone blind love
Stone blind love, the only kind of love is stone blind love
With your blind love, the only kind of love is stone blind love
Stone blind love, stone blind love

Yeah. I hadn't listened to it in years, but "Guilt" came to mind first time I read this question. I thought I had better give it another listen to make sure my memory was clear, and ended up listening to the whole cd. Wonderful! I don't know why it ended up gathering dust for so long.

WCH would be another contender. He could cover, Broken English too.

Laurie

Feeling Jazzy today
Short but Sweet by Louis Armstrong
It was short but it was so sweet
Neverless maybe we'll meet
Some other place some other day some other time
Though it's sad I know it's true you've gone away with someone new.
I played the game I can't explain
It was short but it was so sweet........
You'll always be honey to me

Unforgettable Nat King Cole
Unforgettable, that's what you are
Unforgettable though near or far
Like a song of love that clings to me
How the thought of you does things to me
Never before has someone been more
Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too
Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too

I would like to see Leonard cover Lou Reed's album Berlin. It would be quite interesting.
The Imaged Word, it is, that holds
hushed willows anchored in its glow.
It is the unbetrayable reply
whose accent no farewell can know.

Cohen does Reed

Post by rayc »

I don't fancy LC doing all of Berlin. The title track yeah, The Bed & Lady day most certainly. Caroline Says would be a maybe though & Oh Jim is a definite nah.
Perfect Day from Transformer & Street Hassles would lend theselves to Cohen magic.

Actually - apart from 1 or 2 of the suggestions - I MUCH prefer Cohen singing Cohen. 8)
