I do not know why you are all worried about Geoffrey, especially those who have been around here for a number of years and have witnessed his behaviour. After all, Geoffrey comes and goes on a regular basis: he graces us with his eminence when things get dull upon Mount Olympus (or wherever it is that he resides), and/or when he desires some amusement and attention from his faithful subjects. Like the sheep that he has so often called us, we patiently await his return, grazing rather aimlessly without his guidance and wisdom, until the jubilant day when he finally reappears. At that point, we all gather excitedly at his feet, lavishing him with praise, once again basking in the light of his glory.

Geoffrey passed away towards the end of last month after being rushed to hospital complaining of severe stomach pains. According to the person I spoke to, his last words were "I told them those quail eggs were off!"

You will never be forgotten, dear Geoffrey. You were a beloved gentleman, a skillful writer, musician and artist possessing great wit and intelligence. This forum will be a mediocre place without you.

RIP :-(

Oh, my goodness, it would seem that poor old Geoffers is off of his medication again, and his alter-ego, "snowdrop/Gudrun" has returned!

Incidentally, if one is interested in the meaning, origin and history of the name Gudrun: it is from the Old Norse name Guðrún meaning "god's secret lore", derived from the elements guð "god" and rún "secret lore". We all know that Geoffrey has a God-complex, so it is rather fitting that his alter-ego would possess such a name!

Welcome back, Gudrun, and enjoy your stay -- as always, it will be temporary, just until Geoffrey-prime regains control of his mind.

The shock of the news of Geoffrey's demise is softened in that it comes from snowdrop.
Death reports are sometimes premature, especially in the internet age
Only a few days ago there was a disturbing internet 'death hoax' concerning Leonard - not true of course
I certainly hope that Geoffrey will return someday.
Maybe there is something in reincarnation ?

I doubt if Geoffrey's return will require anything of such mystical proportions.

Going back to my previous discussion of the etymology of names/words, let us for a moment examine "snowdrop". Not everyone may know that Geoffrey's screen-name in a former incarnation of the LC Forum was "snow". The word "snowdrop" may refer to "the droppings of snow". Another word for "droppings", particularly from a living organism, is "sh*t". Therefore, putting all of this information together, "snowdrop" becomes synonymous with "Geoffrey's sh*t".

No need to thank me for my interpretation of today's events -- it is the least I can do in my quest to banish ignorance and misinformation from the internet.

Oh, you're back.

You've been sketching the street-people again, I see. I hope you tossed him a krone or two afterwards. ;-)

admittedly, i do give away quite a lot - though it's never enough. pauperism is rich in experience, one of the most valuable conditions a human can acquire. call me a reluctant philanthropist, a cowardly moron, but when these cunning down-and-outs make eye contact, give that artificial smile - it seems easier to toss a coin than stride arrogantly past. i have great respect for these parasite wretches. involuntary freeloaders, without a doubt, but there are armies of them, sitting near gutters with their filthy paper cups, trying to survive in a hostile world - not unlike rats. call me stupid, call me every loser's winning lottery ticket, but i do toss a coin. only after one's spirit has been goosed by the fingers of affluence can one appreciate pleasure derived from being able to give. an act of unselfishness is oxygen to a demanding ego. permitting dogs to hoover up crumbs falling from one's table creates a warm feeling of superiority. a poacher with a full stomach is hunting for adrenaline, the prey merely a lunchbox in which his sandwich is carried. people in my circle consider acts of kindness naive, the word 'fool' has been used to describe my person, and yet i am insulted not. for pride is a luxurious commodity that gains no entry to my consciousness, there is no room at the inn, it's an invalid conception - like a frame around a map of the world. peter was the rock upon which jesus would build his church, yet seeds thrive not upon a rock, everybody knows the good guys lost. i have no stone tablets and a chisel, merely a black marker pen that tries to leave fossils on a piece of paper, so that someone someday may know i was here. a futile exercise, i am sure - but who knows? it is like seeing a distant aquaintance at the supermarket or the petrol station. you give a nod with a tight-lipped artificial smile; it's just a way of saying you're available for a chat should the need present itself.

Clearly, Geoffrey, you are more noble than most. And really, what is more laudable than writing a long paragraph on a public forum extolling your moral superiority while maintaining the utmost humility? Bravo!

I have always preferred anonymous philanthropy.

May I suggest, however, that in future, rather than throwing money at the unfortunates living on the street, you may instead stop to enquire as to what they may be most in need, be it a warm meal or a warm coat, and obtain that for them. The reality is that many of these people are substance abusers, and giving them money only encourages their bad habits, rather than contributes to their well-being.

Cheerio!

you know, sometimes you frighten me. teeth are always waiting behind the curtains when someone kisses you, and i wonder: is this the hug one sees on train platforms, or that of a boa constrictor? this column, right down here, is not the front page of the new york times, lisa. how many people do you think are following you and i on this "public forum"? apart from the two of us there's maybe jarkko, leonard and the occasional one or two stragglers who have nothing better to do. the number of people reading this could fit into a volkswagon.

>I have always preferred anonymous philanthropy.

well, perhaps publicly standing by one's actions is more virtuous than doing so anonymously, as openly being a model of generosity could possibly more easily inspire others to do likewise. several other millionaires followed suit after bill gates gave half of his fortune to charities.

the reality is that many, indeed most, of these beggars are from eastern countries, and they have a 'backman' who provides their essential needs, on condition they beg for cash. i do talk to them, have shared pizza with them, made drawings that i've given to them, but they are mostly bulgarian or romanian, and normally speak neither english nor scandinavian. therefore communication is very limited. so too have i seen a stern-looking gentleman empty what they've collected into his hand, and the angriness in his face when it is too little.

I meant what I wrote as a bit of verbal sparring to amuse the masses, nothing more! But, if we aren't playing the same game (and/or if nobody is watching), then there is no point in continuing, so I shall be off. Last person out, please turn out the lights!
