More biographical confusion

Post by Lars »

Hi all.
Ira B. Nadels "VArious positions" and Jim Devlins "In every style of passion" seems to differ on more points than Cohens grandparents and great grandparents. Nadel writes that Cohens first public performance as a singer was at a antinuclear event in New York, April 30 1967. Devlin agrees on the date but writes that it was an anti Vietnam war event. Does anyone know who is right?

Second question. On "Winter Lady" there are two guitars. Does anyone know who plays besides Cohen?

About 1967 you're right. I tried to decipher that because today nobody knows about what all those protests were about (well, it seems everything). I know that it was reffered also as Judy Collins SANE protest show. I guess that SANE is Safe Anti Nuclear something (Energy?)?

We tried to solve this on http://www.leonardcohenlive.com (JF&me). It seems that even the show on which Leonard broke down to tears during debut (on Suzanne) isn't confirmed. Early shows here.

Town Hall
New York, NY, USA
April 30, 1967
[not recorded]

-. Suzanne

comment:
Anti-Vietnam War benefit concert, organized by SANE (National Committe for a Sane Nuclear Policy). Famous professional debut with Suzanne's breakdown (Cohen suffered crowd fright and left stage; Judy Collins had to convice him to return and finish the song... but maybe this happened during WBAI concert later this year).

So both can actually be right. Thank you for your swift answer? REgarding the guitarplaying on "Winter Lady": I have been searching the site for information about the studiomusicians, but so far in vain. Is it there?

As far I know, musicians by albums are listed only on my&Jurica's site (here).
But there's no any data for first three albums in the booklets. That reseaarch still awaits us (I know there are many musicians mentioned in Rawlin-Dorman, Devlin and Nadel books, so we will try to make some kind of supposed list. For know, we have only wild guesses for 2nd and 3rd album, from my memory from reading those books long ago:).
