I ordered Old Ideas from Zavvi and have been listening to it for a week. I don't have a Spanish edition. I very rarely buy albums here as they are usually much more expensive than in most other countries. Still, I was quite surprised on Saturday when I saw that it was not in the local shops (or at least not in the ones I checked). It might be that SONY does not want the fans to become "dogmatic" too soon. As I've said before I'm not against translations or adaptations,it is just that they become unnecessary once you become familiar with an artist's work.

Don't want to become more dogmatic than the Pope..

Even though much of the discussion here has been theoretical (does JS have the right to 'adapt' LC's lyrics, does the Spanish public need translations in order to enjoy the album, etc) I'd like to point to something that few have mentioned so far, ie the quality of these translations. On a recent visit to Spain I bought the CD with the translations, and even though I'm not a native Spanish speaker (and I invite native speakers to correct me if I'm wrong), I found even at a quick glance that some of the translations were plainly WRONG, and others simply careless. Of the two songs that I looked at:

'Darkness' seems to be clumsily translated word by word (as if by Google Translate): 'I ain't had much loving yet/ But that's always been your call' - 'No he amado mucho todavia/ Pero siempre ha estado tu llamada'. Here the translator clearly doesn't know the idiomatic meaning of 'your call' (ie your choice) and instead just barges on and translates the literal meaning of call, 'llamada' (as in phonecall, etc). 'I used to love the view' - 'Solia amar lo que veia' and clunkily onwards.

'Lullaby' is indeed adapted (I get the feeling there were two translators at work here, maybe JS adapting and Google Translator guy), but the translator got tired with the 3rd verse (Sleep baby sleep/ There's a morning to come) and simply repeats the translation of the first one (Sleep baby sleep/ The day's on the run).

I haven't had time to look into all the other lyrics and translations, but from this sample I'd say this looks like a rushed job which doesn't look like it's been revised even once.

Sí, alguna "colleja" habría que darle al Sabina ...pero estos errores gramaticales o lingüísticos, se compensan también con textos excepcionales, como en la canción "Banjo", por ejemplo.
