Re: famous blue raincoat backing singer
The vocalists on 'Songs of Love and Hate', where FBR was first recorded (please someone correct me if I'm wrong) were Corlynn Hanney and Susan Mussman. Perhaps others here, who are so much more knowledgeable can further enlighten you.Daryl wrote: Does anyone know who the 'famous blue raincoat' backing singer was?... on the record.. not live etc.

I only have the cassette for Songs of LC and it does not have any info on it. Perhaps you have the LP or CD on this and can give Daryl this info?

Re: famous blue raincoat backing singer
Hi Folks,
My vinyl of "Songs of Love and Hate" does have a credit list as an insert - I can't remember seeing it until I looked just now.
It confirms the info from the CD. No such luck with "Songs of LC" vinyl or my CD copy. However below is a quote from Wikipedia re Nancy Priddy:
She was a member of The Bitter End Singers in 1964, a short lived folksinging group along with Lefty Baker, Tina Bohlmann, Bob Hider, Norris O'Neill, and Vilma Vaccaro. In 1968, she released the album You've Come This Way Before. It is now regarded as a classic of psychedelic folk. That same year she contributed backup vocals to Leonard Cohen's debut album Songs of Leonard Cohen.

Re: famous blue raincoat backing singer
Mystery solved re: backup vocals on 'Songs of LC'. I knew someone here would have that info or find a way to search it out. My google search for her name netted nil. Thank you Alan!

Another question:
Forgive me for not starting a new post.. i didn't think it was worth it.
Does anyone know the reason why LC used two mic's tapped together when he toured back in the day?...

Aww - aren't you sweet. Hope you stick around. On the whole, you'll find out that it is a kind and gentle place.Daryl wrote:Wow... i love this forum. I use another one.. (not LC) and it can be pretty hostile and unfriendly.. this place is sweet.

I'm sure that someone here will update the wiki page. Sorry I don't know the answer to the two mics. Be interested in knowing.

I'm gonna stick around.. yup.
I noticed that Beefheart (RIP) also used the two mics tapped together set up as well..
Maybe it was a 60/70's thing.. when the sound wasn't good enough, or needed to be split into two channels via two mics?...

Info about Nancy Priddy (i.e. nancy Applegate, mother of Christina Applegate the actress) comes from our Forum in November 2005: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4689
Jim Williams wrote: Here's the full text of Nancy's letter:
A friend of mine saw an Ask Fred question concerning the voices behind Leonard Cohen on his first three albums. Well I don't know about the second or third but I certainly do about the first, which contained Hey, That's No Way To Say Goddbye, Suzanne and So Long, Marianne.
At that time I was writing with John Simon, the album's producer, who was a very good friend. When Columbia informed him that they would put no futher money into the project, John told me we'd have to finish the album together. I was delighted to do that - so I provided the female voice on the record. I believe John song with me on So Long, Marianne, but I certainly did Suzanne and Hey, That's No Way To Say Goddbye.
John and I loved Leonard's songs, and when we played our additional vocals to him he seemed to love our work in return. I often think about the first time John played Leonard's work for me in that darkish studio, late night in New York. Little did any of us know what would happen with those songs - especially the record label!

Love that letter, Tom! Never saw it before... I can just imagine how it was for her hearing Leonard's songs in that dark studio. Thanks to them for their generousity and belief in Leonard.
