Greetings from Montreal, the city of Leonard Cohen.

Mike Regenstreif's Folk Roots/Folk Branches is the best radio program we have here in Montreal. It's always really great and I'm sure the Leonard Cohen Special on Thursday is going to be fantastic.

Hi Helen - your name reminded me that the first record I ever bought in my life was by a singer called Helen Shapiro. I have moved on since then

Hi Paula,

Someone once asked me if I was that Helen Shapiro. I'd never even heard of her then.

"Walking back to Happiness" the first record I bought. I think she was only 14 at the time.

It is nice to know she is still going Margaret. She had a strong voice for a 14 year old.

An excellent program. I listened live over the radio and have played it twice again from the web archive.

The songs by Perla Batalla were superb. I can't wait for her CD to come out.

It was also a big treat to hear Tom Russell, one of very favourite singer-songwriters, do "Tower of Song."

I really enjoyed this programme, though I missed Un Canadien Errant off the end. I shall have to specify a slightly longer running time next time.

It was very interesting to hear all the different cover versions. I liked Johnny Cash's Bird on the Wire, Madeleine Peyroux's Dance Me to the End of Love with the russian folk-song backing, and Rachel Bissex's jazzy A Singer Must Die. But Perla Batalla's contribution was far and away the best. I'm really looking forward to her album coming out, and she was also the most interesting interviewee. I particularly liked her answer when asked why produce yet another cover version of Suzanne. I'm paraphrasing heavily here, but she basically said that Leonard Cohen is like Beethoven. There are lots of versions of Beethoven's symphonies around, but that doesn't stop orchestras wanting to produce their own. The music is there for everyone, it has something for everyone, and each new performer brings part of themselves to it and sheds new light on the work by their performance.

I still firmly believe that no-one can sing Leonard Cohen better than Leonard Cohen, but this programme is evidence that it is very rewarding for others to try.

Great synopsis of your experience, Linmag. I agree on the excellence of Perla's answer 8) . I've heard some excerpts from her album, and will be buying it, too. Likewise, with Julie's :D .

Dance me

Post by Simon »

This was a great show. A good balance of versions in the original golden voice and really beautifull interpretations by various artists. A few of those interpretations made me go WoW...! Among them
- Dance me to the end of love- by Madeleine Peyroux.

http://www.madeleinepeyroux.com/index.php?id=audio.php

I had loved the interpretation of the song, a few years ago, by Kate Gibson on the Strange Days soundtrack album. Of course Leonard sings it wonderfully, but my ear and heart prefer it on a woman's voice. Madeleine Peyroux's interpretation is just another example of how universal Leonard Cohen's songs will become with time, just as jazz standards are. You are always curious to hear a new interpretation of a jazz standard.

Jennifer Warnes in the - Ballad of the Runaway Horse- was also a WoW hit with me.

For those of you not familiar with Montréal, CKUT is the community radio of McGill University, that Leonard Cohen attended.
