Does Mr Cohen know that there was a paid for by Carly Foirina political ad on the youtube website preceding his song Alleluia? Can politicians do that? Or do they need permission from the artist?

I would imagine they can.YouTube is in the business of making money so it only stands to reason that they could sell anything on their site to anyone they wish. Politicians can buy advertisement on any medium as well so the two entities are a perfect match! It's a "side-effect" of capitalism.
