Tony Palmer presents "Bird on a wire"

Does anyone know who suppressed the edit of Bird on a Wire that played at the Rainbow Theatre in 1974? That detail is hazy. Was it Leonard? Did he not like the way the film portrayed him or what it revealed? That edit was not "confrontational" or political.

Ενα ντοκιµαντέρ που ήταν χαµένο για 36 χρόνια και παρουσιάζει έναν πιεσµένο και γεµάτο ένταση Λέοναρντ Κοέν, ετοιµάζεται για την πρεµιέρα του.

Αυτό τον µήνα, σε ένα λιβάδι της Ουαλίας, πρόκειται να γίνει η πρεµιέρα ενός µουσικού ντοκιµαντέρ που ήταν χαµένο 36 χρόνια. Το «Βird on a wire» είχε γυριστεί το 1972 κατά τη διάρκεια της ευρωπαϊκής περιοδείας του Λέοναρντ Κοέν. Τώρα θα το δει το κοινό έτσι ακριβώς όπως είχε σκοπό ο δηµιουργός του αρχικά να το παρουσιάσει στο Green Μan Festival.

Ο λόγος που το ντοκιµαντέρ ήταν χαµένο τόσο καιρό είχε να κάνει µε την αστάθεια του χαρακτήρα του καλλιτέχνη, που είχε αλλάξει γνώµη.

Εκείνη την εποχή ο Κοέν ήταν έτοιµος να σταµατήσει τις συναυλίες και είχε συµφωνήσει µε την ιδέα του µάνατζέρ του, ότι µε την ταινία θα µπορούσε να φτάσει σε µεγαλύτερο ακροατήριο. Ο σκηνοθέτης που του είχε προταθεί, ο Τόνι Πάλµερ, ήταν ένας αναγνωρισµένος κινηµατογραφιστής, χάρη στο ντοκιµαντέρ του για τη µουσική και την πολιτική «Αll my loving» και το σουρεαλιστικό road movie του Φρανκ Ζάπα, «200 Μotels».

Ο Κοέν συναίνεσε, αλλά µετά, όταν πήρε µια πρώτη γεύση, αποφάσισε πως το τελικό προϊόν δεν τον ικανοποιούσε.

Μια περικοµµένη έκδοσή του είχε κυκλοφορήσει δύο χρόνια αργότερα και αµέσως εξαφανίστηκε. Ο Πάλµερ, που δεν είχε καµία σχέση µε αυτό, είχε αµελήσει να κρατήσει µία κόπια της δικής του δουλειάς. Ετσι πήδηξε από τη χαρά του όταν πέρυσι βρέθηκαν οι αυθεντικές ταινίες σε µία αποθήκη στο Χόλιγουντ. Ακόµη πιο πολύ ενθουσιάστηκε όταν είδε πως θα µπορούσε να πραγµατοποιήσει το αρχικό του όραµα. Κρίνοντας από στιγµιότυπα που διέρρευσαν στο ΥouΤube, κάθε φαν του Κοέν πρέπει να ετοιµάζεται να κάνει πάρτι. Η σηµασία της ταινίας ξεπερνά τη νοσταλγία.

Είναι σηµαντικό το βάθος που ο Πάλµερ δίνει στο µουσικό ντοκιµαντέρ. Παρουσιάζει την εικόνα του διανοούµενου καλλιτέχνη, αλλά δεν µένει εκεί, θέλει να «σπάσει» τη µυστικιστική σχέση ανάµεσα στο κοινό και το είδωλο.

Αρχές δεκαετίας του ‘70 το glitter rock και οι Roxy Μusic έρχονται στο µυαλό, αλλά και µία επιθυµία να δείξει κανείς τι υπήρχε πίσω από το τέχνασµα. Ενα από τα πιο απρόσµενα παραδείγµατα αυτού του είδους του ντοκιµαντέρ ήταν το «Slade in Flame». Σε αυτή τη θαρραλέα παρουσίαση της θεαµατικής πορείας µιας µπάντας, παρακολουθούµε τα µέλη των Flame, ενός γκρουπ που άρχισε να παίζει από µικρά κλαµπ και γνώρισε µεγάλη φήµη στη συνέχεια κάνοντας διάφορους συµβιβασµούς.

Το «Slade in Flame» επίσης ανοίγει παράθυρο και σε αφήνει να δεις τις κρυµµένες πλευρές της µουσικής βιοµηχανίας. Δύσκολο σήµερα να πετύχεις κάτι τέτοιο χωρίς οι καλλιτέχνες και οι µάνατζερ να έχουν τον απόλυτο έλεγχο γι’ αυτό που θα βγει προς τα έξω.

Αντί να αφήσουν τους παραγωγούς και σκηνοθέτες να κάνουν τη δουλειά τους, προσφέρουν multimedia υλικό και DVD, τα οποία ουσιαστικά είναι προµόσιον και ελέγχονται από τους καλλιτέχνες.

Παράδειγµα το «Stones in exile», η ταινία που δείχνει την ηχογράφηση του άλµπουµ των Rolling Stones «Εxile on Μain Street», που το γκρουπ ενέκρινε για την προώθηση της επανακυκλοφορίας του άλµπουµ. Το µόνο ίσως ντοκιµαντέρ τα τελευταία χρόνια που έδινε µια όχι και τόσο προστατευµένη εικόνα συγκροτήµατος στο ροκ, ήταν η περίπτωση των Μetallica και του «Some kind of monster» του 2003, το οποίο αποκάλυπτε την ένταση που υπήρχε ανάµεσα στα µέλη ενός τόσο πετυχηµένου γκρουπ.

Και µε τον πιεσµένο από το άκαµπτο και σκληρό πρόγραµµα της περιοδείας του Κοέν, το «Βird on a wire» προσφέρει ανάλογο υλικό. Μια υπενθύµιση δηλαδή πως τα ροκ ντοκιµαντέρ µπορεί να είναι και κάτι περισσότερο από διαφηµιστικά.

Δύο DVD τον Σεπτέµβριο

Το «Βird on a wire» ήταν να βγει κατά το τέλος του 1972 και ύστερα από µία πρώτη προβολή, το ΒΒC αµέσως αγόρασε τα τηλεοπτικά δικαιώµατα. Επειτα από εννιά µήνες όµως στο µοντάζ και µε παράκληση του Κοέν, βγήκε δεύτερη έκδοση το 1974. Ολοι πίστευαν ότι το πρωτότυπο είχε χαθεί ώσπου ανακαλύφθηκαν 290 µποµπίνες µέσα σε σκουριασµένα κουτιά το 2009. Ηταν µεγάλο µέρος της αυθεντικής ταινίας και κυρίως µεγάλο, αν όχι όλο, το αυθεντικό µουσικό µέρος. Ετσι το 2010 µε τον Κοέν και πάλι στη µουσική επικαιρότητα ο Τόνι Πάλµερ ξανάφτιαξε το φιλµ, που έχει διάρκεια 107 λεπτά όπως και το αρχικό και τον Σεπτέµβριο θα κυκλοφορήσει και σε DVD. Θα προβληθεί πρώτη φορά πριν από την επίσηµη πρεµιέρα στο φετινό Leonard Εvent που οργανώνουν οι φαν του, στην Κρακοβία της Πολωνίας, την Παρασκευή, και θα το παρουσιάσει ο σκηνοθέτης.

Αλλο ένα DVD και live άλµπουµ έρχεται από τον Καναδό επίσης µέσα στον Σεπτέµβριο. Είναι το «Songs from the road», που εκτός από τα τραγούδια που ερµηνεύει στη σκηνή από διάφορους σταθµούς της περιοδείας του, έχει και µία συνέντευξη από τα παρασκήνια που δίνει ο Κοέν στην κόρη του, Λόρκα.

Judging by screenshots leaked on YouTube, all Cohen fans must be prepared to make the party. The importance of the film transcends nostalgia.

It is important that the depth that Palmer gives to the music documentary. It presents an image of an intellectual artist, but he doesn't stay there, he wants to "break" the mystical relationship between audience and idol.

At the beginning of 70's in glitter rock and Roxy Μusic come to mind, but a desire to show you what was behind the ploy. One of the most surprising examples of this kind of documentary was «Slade in Flame». In this bold presentation of the dramatic progress of a band, watching members of the Flame, a band started playing in small clubs and enjoyed great fame and then making several compromises.

The «Slade in Flame» also opens a window and lets you see the hidden aspects of the music industry. Difficult today to succeed this without the artists and managers have complete control so;; what will come out.

Rather than let the producers and directors to do their job, providing multimedia material and DVD, which is essentially promosion and controlled by the artists.

Example «Stones in exile», the film shows the recording of the album Rolling Stones «Exile on Main Street», which the band adopted to promote the rerelease of the album. Another live album and DVD is also the Canadian media in September. Is «Songs from the road», which apart from the songs interpreted in a scene from various stations of his tour, has a backstage interview given by Cohen to his daughter, Lorca.

That is very strange, the DVD seems to have disappeared from Amazon entirely! They don't even have it listed as "out of stock".

I pre-orderderd from Amazon, then heard that people were having problems with their order. I went to Barnes and Noble today and expected to see a display of dvd's. The clerk had no idea what was happening with it and finally found that they had one copy in the store. Luckily I got it. I don't know whether my Amazon copy will come in???? Anyway I will have two if so. That does not hurt so much

Does anybody know why this film is not available in Canada yet? I have not seen it in any stores, and the various Canadian online sellers have either Sept. 14 or even Sept. 21 as a release date! What's up with that? I have abandoned my plan to "buy Canadian" and have simply ordered it from the U.S. (barnesandnoble.com, in fact, who claim to have it in stock, as noted by sue7 above).
