Tom

you naughty man you and paul promised me beautiful Zagreb spring weather..........there's going to a break from today's snow before it all starts again next monday......looking at the bbc zagreb weather chart below for the next 5 days the line from shakespeare's hamlet comes immediately to mind...............

o woe is me to have seen what i have seen, see what i see

....of course we have the possible lufthansa strike to worry about first before we have to start to worrying about struggling thru snow storms on the streets of zagreb next week.....:-) ta ken

Yeah, I am also worried. Spring's already two or three weeks late this year, very strange. Last week we did have Spring days, but suddenly the Winter tries to break back again.

Everybody Knows Leonard Cohen #2
TRIBUTE TO LEONARD COHEN
SAX, 15.3.2010. u 20h
TOWER OF SONGS (ZAGREB) feat.

Jarkko Arjatsalo, koji će sudjelovati u promociji hrvatskih izdanja o Cohenu (biografije Ire Nadela i Tima Footmana, specijalni broj časopisa Quorum).

20h videoprojekcija
21h Henning Franz (Njemačka) http://www.tea-and-oranges.de / http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/hfranz.html
22h Tower of Songs (Hrvatska) http://www.towerofsongs.net

As I sit in Pristina airport in a terrible snowstorm waiting to get back to Zagreb, what can I say, Ken? When I moved to Zagreb in 1994 I kept saying how great it was to live somewhere with seasons instead of weather. These days it can be plus 15 degrees one day and minus 4 the next. But Ken, last time I was in Sax club it had a roof so you should be ok. And the nearby mountain Sljeme (well mountain by british standards!!!!) is great when the snow falls! Paul

sorry everybody i'm still having problems with our group emails......just arrived home to see that folk are starting to make plans......i looked up some info awhile back but with the lufthansa strike pending i thought i would hang on to it....however seeing as we all now seem to be feeling postive this is what i found......

.......as has been already said don't use the airport taxis....the bus from the airport to the bus terminal in zagreb takes about 20/30 minutes depending on traffic....when you come out of the bus terminal in zagreb turn sharp left and walk until you come to the overhead railway bridge then turn left along Branimirra until you come to the rail station entrance then cross the road and walk up the road opposite keeping king tom square to your right you will the cross paval hatza and then you will see jj strossmayern square on your right the palace hotel will be on the next corner...walking time aboout 20/30 minutes but if pete needham is reading this then 18 /27 minutes...or as paul has suggested you can take the number 6 tram from oustside the bus terminal and get off outside the hotel......

click to enlarge and the blue line is your route from the bus terminal to the palace hotel

Ken seems to know the city better than we do. Tram map is here http://www.zet.hr/media/58085/tram%20mr ... %20web.pdf

Tickets can be bought from kiosks (8.50kn I think) or by mobilephone text zg to 8585 ... or from the driver

I think 'ruin' is a bit of an exaggeration (that's my boy!!!!) .. it will just be a rather flexible interpretation of what we meant by Zagreb spring :-)

I hope the interpretation of "Zagreb summer" will be a little (a lot ...) less flexible for those of us who will be there in the summer!

.....during the last few months i have attended a number of cohen meet-ups where i have endured torrential monsoon rain storms in venice....climbed mountains in a blistering welsh heatwave....and almost froze to death in the coldest liverpool on record....so i'm sure the expected 25 ft. high snowdrifts in zagreb will not deter any of us from having a very enjoyable time in Zagreb.......

......cohenites do it in all weathers.......ta ken

PROVISIONAL SCHEDULE (TO BE DISCUSSED AT THE SITE) :)

Friday evening:
night out (pub, beer)
Friday is the day for going out here, with all clubs open, so we will see...:)

Saturday:
Museums open 10-13 during weekends...
The City Museum of Zagreb runs the exhibition Modernization at the periphery of Austro-Hungarian Empire
http://www.mgz.hr/en/
Also, 4 levels of the city history from prehistoric times to medieval Zagreb (founded 1092) to the 1990s.
This museum is open until 7pm on Saturday.

The Mimara Museum of Old Artists - famous for many fake stuff :P > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimara_Museum
I'd 100% recommend small gallery of Museum of Croatian Naive Art > http://www.hmnu.org/en/default.asp - we can make stop there as it's in the middle of old upper town, and it has only 5-6 rooms (museum waits the new building to be finished).

city-seeing

17h: Leonard Cohen Screening (moderated by me) in the biggest city bookstore, Profil Megastore, Bogoviceva Street, part of their Multimedia Week

dinner
night out (pub)

Sunday:
Museums open 10-13, except Museum of Contemporary Art which works until 19h
morning walk to the flee market downtown (Britanski trg - British Square) and city seeing

Archaeological Museum (Jarkko's good idea) > http://www.amz.hr/home.aspx
This museum has the world most famous Etruscan manuscript and the mummy > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liber_Linteus
Also, the Roman statue of Apoksiomen.
Note: this museum is 50 meters from the Palace hotel.

lunch - possibly on the mountain at the Medvedgrad fortress, if weather is fine
17-19h: guided tour at newly opened Museum of Contemporary Arts at 5pm > http://www.msu.hr/#/en/

Monday:
Museums closed.
If weather is fine, possible trip to the Plitvice National Park.
Rockmark - rock bookstore - Leonard Cohen Day (all Cohen books in Croatian on special sale)
20h: tribute concert at the SAX! club: Tower of Songs feat. Henning Franz

The main disadvantage is working hours of museums during weekends - 10-13 - so we can make one on Saturday morning and another on Sunday, plus our guided visit in MSU at 5pm.
