Kwills - Well done! "Black Dog" by Babe Ruth has to be one of the great revivals of this thread. I loved that in the Seventies, but I never bought the "First Base" album, as the other tracks didn't grab me in quite the same way. I rembered that the song was written by Jesse Winchester (I couldn't find his laid-back version on youtube), but I had to remind myself of Jenny Haan's name. Anyway, she gives an amazing performance in your video link...a sort of cross between Grace Slick and Janis Joplin.

Thanks John,I wasn't sure of the response I'd get from Babe Ruth as they're not everyones cup of tea.It goes back to when I was about nine or ten listening to my brothers big tape deck (he is 9yrs older)that when I first heard of David Bowie (The Man Who Sold The World) and that classic track from Babe Ruth,"Black Dog".Hooked on Bowie ever since! I love The First Base album from Babe Ruth if you want a copy let me know.

kwills - no, I saw that when I was looking ...it's neither "Black Dog" nor "Jesse Winchester (strange).

Ah, Ted Hawkins.What a character and what a great voice.
I came across his music in the 80s (Kershaw sessions) and saw him a couple of times after he moved to Bridlington in the UK in 1986.
I have been listening to his songs quite a lot recently. Sadly he died at age 58, in 1995, from a stroke, just as he was beginning to break into the commercial arena with 'The Next Hundred Years' album.

Tony - "The Legion's Last Patrol" brings back memories. I bought that in 1963, aged twelve. It was an out of character choice for me at the time, since my next two purchases were a Searchers E.P. and single.

Bequia - I forgot "Grazing in the Grass" was by Hugh Masekela. I saw him on Paul Simon's "Graceland" tour, but didn't make this association.
