Kwills - Well done! "Black Dog" by Babe Ruth has to be one of the great revivals of this thread. I loved that in the Seventies, but I never bought the "First Base" album, as the other tracks didn't grab me in quite the same way. I rembered that the song was written by Jesse Winchester (I couldn't find his laid-back version on youtube), but I had to remind myself of Jenny Haan's name. Anyway, she gives an amazing performance in your video link...a sort of cross between Grace Slick and Janis Joplin.
Cheers, John E

Thanks John,I wasn't sure of the response I'd get from Babe Ruth as they're not everyones cup of tea.It goes back to when I was about nine or ten listening to my brothers big tape deck (he is 9yrs older)that when I first heard of David Bowie (The Man Who Sold The World) and that classic track from Babe Ruth,"Black Dog".Hooked on Bowie ever since! I love The First Base album from Babe Ruth if you want a copy let me know.
Liked that last link you gave too.

kwills - no, I saw that when I was looking ...it's neither "Black Dog" nor "Jesse Winchester (strange).
Meanwhile, here's something completely different:
First, a tune recorded by The Beatles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aeQxKdphPc ("A Taste of Honey" by Herb Alpert)
Second, a George Harrison song featuring three Beatles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT7HMdUEBI4 ("Sour Milk Sea" by Jackie Lomax)
Third, a song (sort of!) mentioning both of the former artists: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyPw4ZjCOho ("Go To Rhino Records" by Wild Man Fischer)

After Wild Man Fischer from the streets of LA, here are a few from a Venice Beach "street musician" who occasionally came into some recognition but always seemed to find a way back to the boardwalk:
Ted Hawkins:
Watch Your Step, 1982
Don't Make Me Explain It, 1985
Searching For My Love, 1986
All I Have To Offer You Is Me, 1994

Ah, Ted Hawkins. What a character and what a great voice.
I came across his music in the 80s (Kershaw sessions) and saw him a couple of times after he moved to Bridlington in the UK in 1986.
I have been listening to his songs quite a lot recently. Sadly he died at age 58, in 1995, from a stroke, just as he was beginning to break into the commercial arena with 'The Next Hundred Years' album.

Hey frscogrl - I was trying to think of a Herb Alpert track apart from the obvious "This Guys in Love" but you've found it! I'd forgotten that one.

Talking of Herb Alpert here is a trumpet solo that made the UK charts in 1963, I believe.

Thanks kwills for posting Hot Buttered Popcorn, I do remember it. I loved the video, I felt like I had just drank some cider laced with acid!

Re: Songs that may be forgotten, or many people have never heard
A couple of other horn players with hits in the '60's:
Java, Al Hirt, 1964
Grazing In The Grass, Hugh Masekela, 1968
Masekela can also be heard on this hit:
So You Want To Be A Rock and Roll Star, The Byrds, 1967
... and would later be among the South Africans accompanying Paul Simon on the 1987 tour that concluded in Zimbabwe:
Township Jive/Bring Him Back Home/Stimela, Hugh Masekela, 1987
And a "popcorn" song from the '60's by someone with a pretty solid horn section:
Mother Popcorn, James Brown, 1969

Re: Songs that may be forgotten, or many people have never heard
Tony - "The Legion's Last Patrol" brings back memories. I bought that in 1963, aged twelve. It was an out of character choice for me at the time, since my next two purchases were a Searchers E.P. and single.
Bequia - I forgot "Grazing in the Grass" was by Hugh Masekela. I saw him on Paul Simon's "Graceland" tour, but didn't make this association.
