Mary I think you have a point I don't think Cheese cutters do have a button. Whilst googling I found a few thing out about cheese cutters. It is New Zealanders that call them that I don't know where I got it from I always called them cheese cutter.
But another piece of trivia Tweed (the material) was traditional soaked in urine which is why Tweed has that smell to it
A bit of history about the flat cap
In England an act of parliament in the 1570's, to increase english wool trade, made it compulsory, unless you were one of the nobility or a VIP to wear a hat of cloth on Sundays and holidays. This ludicrous act was repealed in the late 1500's but by this time the flat caps was certainly part of english folklore. Whats more with this act, the flat caps became known as headwear for the working class. However as time passed by the gentry realised that actually the flat cap is "quite practical", especially when it rained! So the cloth flat caps is now classless - everyone should own one.
Is the flat cap hip?
Absolutely, some famous people who don the flat caps include Brad Pitt, Madonna, Michael Jordan, US comedian Chris Rock. Apart from Madonna the flat caps has become a fashion product for younger women. The USA team at the Bejing olympics also sported the flat cap for the opening ceremony - very rakish Smile The flat cap is known by various other names - the bunnet (Scotland), Cabby cap (USA), Cheese cutter (NZ & Canada), Golf cap, Foreskin hat! and various others....
