thanks for the correction Flytomars, when I heard it on youtube I thought it was different than what I understood in 1978 with no chance of slow-motion or replay. Anyhow, the sequence is engraved in my heart and I carry it on my way.

I still like to think it was said in the context of perhaps he doesn't know sign language and he wishes he did, so, "I'd like to hear you". It does look like he was speaking to her, since at the moment it was said, her companion looks at her and smiles.

I am not sure this is what he said, it is just what I thought when I saw it -
Like MaryB pointed out, the context was still the same :)
