It took me a moment or two to make the association and then I remembered my verbal rather venomous attack on Mr Darling in a different thread. Recalling it I suppose I was lucky that it was not booted off the the wasteland that is the Politics thread! Thanks for bringing that vision into focus for me, great stuff. :D

I think I should go off and get a hearing aid, or maybe one of those wonderful horn things they used to use in days gone by, my opinion is they were rather regal. Not sure they would go down too well at Leonard Cohen concerts though, they could give the person sitting in the next seat a nasty crack on the head.

Evie,

sorry for the somewhat silly association - but I am in the mood right now: "There is a crack in everything ... ". Imagine Darling (not our forum member, but the famous one!) sitting next to you, it might actually do him good... If that is how the light gets in... ;-)

When I first heard The Future I thought it went:

"When they say
wear pants"

instead of repent.

Might be good advice though 8)

Yes, along the lines of one of the end-of-concert blessings: "And don't catch a [summer] cold"... ;-)

I thought for a long time that "Leaving Green Sleeves" starts At last, my lord you did me wrong even though it goes Alas, my love, you did me wrong. :)
A cross on every hill
A star, a minaret
So many graves to fill
O love, aren’t you tired yet?

I did the exact opposite for 'The Faith'. I always thought it was 'Lord, aren't you tired yet' instead of 'Love, aren't you tired yet'. Although I prefer the 'Lord' over 'love' in the context of this song.

I'm new to this forum and relatively new to Leonard Cohen. I don't know why it took me so long to "discover" him. This type of music has been my favorite since I was a teen, way back when. At least I have discovered him before either of us got too old. He makes me feel young.

I just had to comment on some of the lyics that I've had a problem understanding until I looked them up. I have to keep reminding myself that the line in "If it be your will" reads: "And draw US NEAR" instead of: "and draw a snear"
I was also one of those who thought he said, "Who by something BLOND" instead of: "Who by something BLUNT" in "Who by Fire", one of my very favorite LC songs.

Thanks for the welcome, Mary. I'm starting to find my way around this forum a bit better lately.

There is a line in "Closing Time" that has me a bit confused. I looked up the lyrics and according to the site I went to the line reads:
And my very close companion
gets me fumbling gets me laughing

I'm sure I heard one version of this on YouTube where LC says:
And my very close companion
gets me f*cked gets me laughing

The problem is, I haven't been able to find that particular YouTube clip again. I'm not sure whether I misheard or whether there actually IS a version where he says "f*cked". Anyone able to clerify this for me? If someone is able to find the clip I think I remember could you post a link to it? I know I'm getting old, but I'm not THAT old and my hearing is fine. (altho my partner might argue that one  )

I'm STILL doing my happy dance cuz I got my ticket for the St.Louis show :D

Not a Cohen misunderstanding but (and this is the title of a hilarious book on the subject) my favorite misheard lyric of all time: "' Excuse me while I kiss this guy" instead of Jimmi Hendrix's "Excuse me while I kiss the sky."

I thought for the first few times that I heard "On That day" that Leonard was actually singing "I'm just holding the fork" instead of "fort" - it would have rhymed with "New York", after all, but not with "court", obviously... And I even gave the possible meaning of this line some very serious thoughts...
"You thought that it could never happen / to all the people that you became"...

For me, it will always be: "I'm choked but I'm still holding up this little wild bouquet". I was really disappointed when I discovered the word was actually 'junk'. I still feel 'choked' presents a stronger image, but there we are...

I thought he was singing about someone's head on their pillow like a "sleepy golden stone." Couldn't figure out what was so good about that. Although storm takes some thought, too.
From bitter searching of the heart, we rise to play a greater part. Frank Scott (Although I would never have heard it if it weren't for Leonard Cohen).

I always heard...

"her fingers like a rivers, quick and cool" is actually "her fingers like a weavers..."

I like the river imagery as much as the weaver. Rivers with fingers is cool!
and you sank beneath her wisdom like a stone
