I should have been a bit clearer about the two codes - I actually meant Rugby Union and Football (Soccer). I am assuming of course that England is still regarded as having the potential to win another one of the latter code!
I think you're right about the cricket - though this surely will not always be the case (for the country that invented the game)!?

P.S. A little comment on times and technology: as a teenager here in Australia at the time, huddled over the family radiogram, I listened to the 1966 World Cup Final
live (from midnight on) and was overjoyed by that great win by England!

The experience was repeated with the current TV technology and the World Cup Rugby final victory by England last month (though with not quite the same feeling of elation).
