I'm wondering if the chances are not higher now (with 2 codes up there with a good chance), so that it would, at worst, be more like an 18.5 year wait!

(I don't know if this is mathematically valid or not.) Moreover, we can't entirely rule out the cricket!

I have no doubt that statistically it would be 18.5 years but, I think (and am quite happy to be told otherwise) that in RL terms this sceptred isle is represented by Great Britain rather than national teams.

As far as cricket goes (and I speak as a Robert Croft, Simon Jones fan) that English cricket has a long way to go before it even challenges for a world cup (In fact in 2002 England lost to Wales as part of their World Cup warm up)

JTS (Well done by the way to English Rugby but after the Sports Review of the Year I really hope that that is the end of it!)

I should have been a bit clearer about the two codes - I actually meant Rugby Union and Football (Soccer). I am assuming of course that England is still regarded as having the potential to win another one of the latter code!

I think you're right about the cricket - though this surely will not always be the case (for the country that invented the game)!?

P.S. A little comment on times and technology: as a teenager here in Australia at the time, huddled over the family radiogram, I listened to the 1966 World Cup Final live (from midnight on) and was overjoyed by that great win by England!

The experience was repeated with the current TV technology and the World Cup Rugby final victory by England last month (though with not quite the same feeling of elation).

Andrew, I thought we were friends. Great win ? You seem to still believe that the third England goal really existed. Justice ruled since then. Them Queen shavers will never succeed again.

I think you are right - that 3rd goal has since been disputed because the ball (by observance from some angles) was deemed not to have fully crossed the line!

I'm sure we are still friends - it was just my English blood and boyhood excitement combining at the time

. Besides, I really admired the great German players in that team (eg. Beckenbauer, Seeler) and rest assured I'll continue to support Borussia Dortmund with you, unless they meet Chelsea (in the Champions League or whatever).
