Our Postconcert Meetup at O'Hurley's
Our Postconcert Meetup at O'Hurley's
Cohen Fan Meet ups
We looked at a number of places near the Beacon and it looks like only two very close places would be suitable for a meet up of at least 50, or possibly 100 or more. They are PD O'Hurley's and the Manhattan Diner. We recommend O'Hurley's for the post concert meet-up of forum fans.
PD O’Hurley’s (http://pdohurleys.com) is a rectangular space, divided into two rooms but with good flow between the rooms. It can accommodate 100-plus fairly easily; it has food and bar, and it will be open till 4am. There are bar stools, high table seating, and dining seating in the front room, and dining style tables in the rear. Fair amount of space to stand and chat.
The Manhattan Diner (http://www.restaurant.com/microsite.asp?rid=308387) should be a great spot for food, and is open 24 hours. It has two long narrow spaces, and a small square space in front. The long spaces are very separate. Although the diner could accommodate up to 110 people, and does offer full bar service from the waiters, it is set up primarily to serve food at tables. It has only 5 or so seats at the counter in the square space.
O’Hurley’s is two blocks south of the Beacon, the same side of Broadway, and the Diner is four blocks north, also on the same side of the Avenue. Both are very convenient to the Beacon.
We also investigated several other spots in the immediate vicinity, and believe visitors will find ample additional choices in the area for eats. A couple of the establishments also offer late hours – Big Nick's, serving pizza/burgers/beer is open 24 hours; Café Viand, another full service eatery, stays open till 2am. Other nice places to grab a bite include Niko’s, the café at Fairway Market, West Branch Restaurant, Josie's and Citrus. Niko’s, Big Nick’s, and Fairway are across Broadway from the Beacon, and Josie’s and Citrus are both just around the corner from the theater on Amsterdam. West Branch connects through the lobby to On the Ave Hotel. All of those close around 11, so they are only options for other small meetings before or a day after the concert. Old Dublin House (north across 79th) is open late, but it seems too small for any group approaching 50 or more.
Concur with Harry and jdhayes that PJ Clarks is a nice alternative for before and for those who don’t mind the extra distance. Will leave other meeting plans to the group here. Clarks is eleven blocks south of the Beacon (about one-half mile; 15 minute walk.)
Other NYC restaurant tips: restaurant.com has coupons and menus; restaurant week, which offers discounts and specials usually just one week in winter, has been extended through the full month of February; finally, it is hard to go wrong with food and prices on “restaurant row,” which is the block between 8th and 9th Avenues on 46th street.
As an aside, hotel lobbies at the Beacon, On the Avenue, and Woogo all look like guests will have good accommodations. Public lobby space at all three, however, is only adequate to meet before going elsewhere.
Look forward to seeing everyone!

Great report, Dick!
It was deep into his fiery heart

And then she clearly understood
If he was fire, oh then she must be wood.

Re: Pre and Postconcert Meetups
Hi Dick,
First of all, thank you and Linda for all your hard work and traisping from one place to another to check all this out for us! In my opinion it sounds like a post concert meet-up at O'Hurleys might work best. It has space to move around and accomodate any number of people from a few dozen to 100-150, and is open late. Also not far from the theater. I'll go with whatever the majority decides but this does seem like it would work!
Can't wait!

Hi Dick,
Glad to hear you found a good spot. I did ask around at work but nobody was able to give me any suggestions for that area of the city. Thank you for going the extra mile and checking out all the places before we all arrive in NYC. Looking forward to seeing everyone again
.
Cheers,
Dave

Re: Pre and Postconcert Meetups
O'Hurley's suits me perfectly for the post concert meet up - near the Beacon hotel and with some veggie options on the menu. Thanks for doing all the research Dick!

Re: Pre and Postconcert Meetups
Dick and Linda, again thanks for checking out all the various establishments for the post concert meet up.
I agree with many other forum members that O'Hurley's seems the best place for all of us to gather. I like the fact
that there is flow between the two rooms and that it is conveniently located to the Beacon theatre and hotel.
I also like the that it is open until 4 am! Thanks again for you work. See you in ten days!
