well this is not relevant to my point but those classifications of what is interesting and what is not is - you will agree - only your opinion, most certainly not mine. I have the entire set of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Jerome Kern sung by Kiri Te Kanawa and musically the only Dylan album that I might put against them as equally interesting is his own set of blues and folk covers on Good as I Been to You. Just my preference of course, but those early 20th century american composers are peaks of unsurpassed musical creativity.
But be all of that as it may I will let the high-priced DJ cater to his exclusive clientele (the choice of words is purely coincidental and nothing to do with recent events in NY) and I will continue to support the local DJs and music programs as well as those on public radio.

I don't think the link is that illegal because the show is funded by a sponsor, rather than by the people who listen to it. It is not hidden or underground , but openly publicized on the Dylan website, Expecting Rain. Dylan and his business people must know about it and are doing nothing to stop it. Silence gives consent. The show was sold to AOL last year and free for all subscribers (don't know if it still is). It's good for Dylan to have as many people listen as possible. And if you are "left," also consider being "copyleft" instead of "copyright." Communication must come before commercial greed and who has the right to own it and exploit it for profit? And what about all those old country and blues artists being used on that show? (As Kush pointed out). Don't worry about Bob Dylan who is getting many millions for mouthing words scripted by others( and occasionally sounding ironic about it.). Enjoy American music free and guilt free!

The danger of passing the kind of judgment as I did is of course being a capitalist (with a capital C), were I in that position I might do exactly the same. I doubt I could refuse millions of dollars for playing other people's music on radio (unless I already had millions to start with).
Ironically, I would have no problem if Madonna made the same deal with the radio - I am huge fan of hers and would cheer for her. Its just that Dylan's message in his songs and the life of the musicians whose music he plays seems so far removed and at odds with a corporate 'brand name' DJ deal.
Similarly, I would have no problem with the lavish lifestyle of any ol' Joe Millionaire but Al Gore's message (and very inspiring and mostly accurate it is IMO) is quite at odds with a $ 20,000 monthly electricity bill. After all, he invented the environment.

Hi Lightning, Kush & Minna,

This is an interesting discussion. What comes through so clearly in all of the broadcasts is Dylan's love & appreciation of all types of music. I understand that he has an amazing collection of old recordings. When we attended the Cohen/Dylan event at the 92nd Street Y in New York, one of the presenters argued that Dylan was attempting to record songs in every genre hence his foray into Gospel music.

Regarding the whole money issue, I certainly don't begrudge him earning the money, but I hope that he would in turn be generous and charitable of which none of us would have idea (but I think that it is a good sign that there isn't a public "face" of all of his charitable efforts-the ones that spend a lot of time on that-professional athletes in particular-are the ones that really make me suspicious).

I get the impression that Bob doesn't like people too much, but I forgive him that because he loves (and creates) so much good music.

Hi Joe,

Your posts are a beacon of positivity, always a pleasure to read. I shall cease hostilities with immediate effect and take Mr. Dylan's endeavors at face value. The Gotta Serve Somebody album of gospel covers of Dylan songs by black gospel singers (including a duet with Dylan himself) is a masterpeice.

Hi Kush (& Minna),

I absolutely love that album, too. I've got to play it again sometime-it's been a while.

Hi Minna....will listen to it again and get back to you....I seem to remember Dylan saying "Hawaiheeee!!!" like Joe I have not listened to it in a while. That album also led me to Mavis Staples gospel album Have a Little Faith (and also Aaron Neville's Nature Boy: The Standards album). Dylan's gospel influence on the Staples album is very obvious...worth checking out.

Hi Minna & Kush,

I'll have to listen to it again, but I think that it is referencing Dylan's home on Malibu-not quite sure what the whole African-American stereotype thing is about, but I suspect that Dylan is trying to pay tribute to the wonderful Gospel style that he was using when he wrote these songs.

Mavis Staples played here last winter-I could kick myself for missing it.

Hi Minna....Dylan does not speak English. I havent quite figured out what language it is he speaks but it is not English. He writes very well in it though.
And yeah, I get the impression too that he does not much like people....I get the impression mid way through a concert he is thinking "...dear God, gotta suffer these screaming fools for another 50 minutes...oh well lets just get on with it and get it over with."
