The Rock Hall Museum Attendance Problem?
03.12.08 10:37 PM | Rock Hall Museum | Permalink
Portfolio.com has an article which takes a look at the declining attendance figures at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland. As their chart shows, there was a steep drop in attendance after the first few years the Museum was open, but over the last ten years ticket sales have basically leveled out at around $4.2 million per year. Rock Hall Museum C.E.O. Terry Stewart has plans to bring more people to the museum, which include "a new exhibit featuring Janis Joplin’s Porsche (now on loan from her estate) to bringing the induction show to Cleveland in 2009 and every three years after that."
While bringing the Induction Ceremony back to Cleveland will undoubtedly help raise the profile of the Museum, it won't cure the image problem that the Rock Hall has in the eyes of many people. This website alone contains thousands of pleas to the Hall to induct long ignored fan favorites such as KISS, Rush, Alice Cooper, The Moody Blues, The Monkees, Neil Diamond, Yes, Steve Miller Band, Jethro Tull, and many others. You can't help but wonder if Terry Stewart wishes the New York-based Rock Hall Foundation (who determines the nominees each year) would put some popular names on the ballot to help boost ticket sales at the museum. What's going to bring more people to Cleveland, Janis Joplin's car or a KISS induction with a full blown exhibit to honor them? A Leonard Cohen exhibit or a Monkees induction?

We're not advocating the induction of artists purely to sell Museum tickets, but you have to wonder if every year Terry Stewart shows up at the Nominating Committee meeting hoping that another stadium act like U2 or Aerosmith will get the votes to appear on the ballot (maybe Bon Jovi for 2009?).

They played the 2-hour highlights edition of the 2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on VH1 last night and they showed some different footage of the ceremony.

While Lou Reed was giving the induction speech for Leonard Cohen they showed Tom Hanks watching and listening. Then when Leonard Cohen got up on stage they showed his table with his son Adam watching and clapping, plus these two women, one blonde and one brunette. Really long and thick hair. I don't know who they were. I don't think it was Leonard's sister or his daughter. They looked middle-aged. Maybe Lian Lunson. Not sure. Anjani was there. Then they showed the table where Billy Joel, and John Mellencamp and his wife were sitting. Billy Joel was clapping, John Mellencamp's wife was smiling and clapping, and John Mellencamp was just sitting there with no expression on his face.

During Leonard's speech they showed the same footage where Jon Landau is laughing hysterically with Chevy Chase about the future of rock and roll not being Leonard Cohen, and John Fogerty and one member from the Ramones are sitting at the table behind them and smiling. During Leonard's reciting of Tower of Song, they showed Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan staring at Leonard and listening with smiles on their faces, and Jann Wenner, founder of Rollingstone Magazine and the Rock Hall sitting next to them and smiling and listening too!

When Leonard was done, they showed his table again. Adam Cohen stood up and clapped.

I'm still trying to figure out who those two other women were at Leonard's table.

I will post all the footage on youtube when I get the chance.

I was at the Hall yesterday -- the 2008 inductees aren't on the wall yet, nor are they part of the inductees' film tribute beforehand. This year's inductees have a photo and a short bio in the Hall's hall, together with some display space. Leonard has about a third of a display case, with some photos and materials from the '93 tour, together with a couple first drafts of "If It Be Your Will" and another song. All the stuff in there is owned by the master himself -- it's odd to see his own copies of his own records.

More in due time, I'm sure.

After Patti Labelle's opening performance they showed the table where Leonard was sitting. John Fogerty was sitting at the table in front of Cohen's. It was a nice shot of Cohen and Fogerty. At one point during Madonna's speech they showed Cohen whispering something into Anjani's ear from the back.

Leonard Cohen laughing during Billy Joel's speech for John Mellencamp.
