Madonna in Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame
By JIM FARBER
DAILY NEWS MUSIC CRITIC

Friday, December 14th 2007, 2:08 AM

Where did the time go? Madonna, shown performing last year, was fast tracked into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, 25 years after her first hit. Madonna got fast-tracked into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame this year, making the cut for the class of 2008 on her very first try. An artist must have released their first music twenty-five years earlier to be considered for entry. Madonna issued her first song, "Everybody," in 1982. She's the highest profile star to make this year's coveted list. The four others are Midwest rocker John Mellencamp, Canadian singer-songwriter and literary lion Leonard Cohen, British invasion pop stars The Dave Clark Five, and California surf rock instrumentalists The Ventures. Also inducted this year will be Chicago bluesman Little Walter in the sideman category, and the architects of Philly soul, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. The latter are slated in the "non performer" slot, which has been re-named this year after the late founder of Atlantic Records Ahmet Ertegun. Those nominated this time that didn't make the cut include Donna Summer, Chic, Afrika Bambaataa, and The Beastie Boys. Like Madonna, The Beasties put out their first release in ‘82, a pre-rap, punk EP called "Polly Wog Stew." Though they have far longer careers, Cohen and The Ventures had never been nominated before this year.

A small cabal of music industry types come up with the nominees. Then, some 600 music industry types vote on the final entrants. The new inductees will be honored at a ceremony on March 10, 2008 held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, to air live on VH1. Presenters and performers will be announced at a later date. The 2008 class spans a range of talent, from the supremely gifted to the less so. As cheery as the Dave Clark Five may have been, they're the least substantial of the artists gaining entry this time. It's a long way down from Leonard Cohen who, by most critics' measure, ranks as one of the three best lyricists of the last half century. (The others in that holy trinity would be Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, who each got into the Hall years ago).

Madonna's quick entry may irk some who view her more as businesswoman, and self-generating PR machine, than musician. But no one giving a serious listen to her long list of hits could doubt their remarkable sonic innovation, and sheer hook appeal. If nothing else, it's sure to generate a new round of controversy, mother's milk to Madonna and a good way to generate extra chatter for the Hall as well.

Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame Announces 2008 Inductees
By Mariana McConnell: 2007-12-13 21:34:24

I'm going to preface this piece by saying that the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame is meaningless circle jerk created by Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner, and other out-of-the-loop golden oldies, for the sole purpose of collectively masturbating to the memory of Elvis Presley and jizzing on the legacy of Buddy Holly. In short, it's yet another Baby Boomer nostalgia factory wherein the Greater Generation assuages their irrelevance with self-congratulatory rhetoric and $1,000 per plate chicken dinners.

Okay, now that everything's clear: the inductees for the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame were announced this week! The class of 2008 includes Madonna, blue-collar rocker John Mellencamp, surf rock instrumentalists the Ventures, British invaders the Dave Clark Five, and Canadian poet/musician/Buddhist Leonard Cohen. Madonna was given the honor her first time around - the Hall's rules state that an artist becomes eligible for induction 25 years after their first album was released - while Cohen, Mellencamp, and the Ventures had to wait a combined 43 extra years for their nods.

Mellencamp is a classic rock radio staple with heartfelt heartland paeans such as "Jack and Diane" and "Small Town". His populist beliefs led him to organize Farm Aid in 1984 alongside country legend Willie Nelson and fellow classic rocker Neil Young. No political poseur, Mellencamp told Ronald Reagan to go fuck himself when the clueless Republican shill wanted to use "Pink Houses" in a 1984 campaign ad, apparently mistaking the boiling anger at the heart of the song for a celebration of folksy Americana.

The Ventures' iconic "Walk, Don't Run" defined the surf instrumental genre, even though the band hailed from the gloomy Pacific Northwest rather than the sunny beaches of Southern California. Cohen, the black horse among this year's inductees, is known for his poetic lyrics and oft-covered songs, delivered in his characteristic gravelly voice. The Cohen song "Hallelujah" has been covered extensively, most famously by Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright, the latter of whose cover gained points with the under 10 set for its inclusion in "Shrek". The Dave Clark Five are best remembered for their stomp heavy hit "Glad All Over", which replaced the Beatles' "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" as the number one song in the January 1964 U.K. Singles Chart, as well as for eponymous drummer/songwriter Dave Clark's general dickishness (just ask fellow Invader Graham Nash of the Hollies). And Madonna? Well, you already know all about her.

Other inductees include harmonica player Little Walter and Philadelphia Sound mastermind producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, inducted under the "sidemen" and "producers" categories respectively. Although producers are not musicians (not really, anyway), they were given a category of their own in 2000 because the Hall is magnanimous like that.

In reality, the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame is a lot like High School. This analogy isn't so far fetched when you consider the sad similarities between the two. Both the Hall and High School are institutions created to maintain and perpetuate the status quo. Both are built upon a hierarchy of pettiness and exclusivity masquerading as education and recognition. Most strikingly, both tout themselves as important cultural milestones and both are largely insignificant in the larger scheme of things. So, if the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame was your high school, Madonna would be the rich girl who always manages to mention how much more expensive her jeans are than yours, Mellencamp would be the football star who, despite his many accolades, is still cool with you, Cohen would be the stoner who always writes something good in the yearbook, and the Ventures would be the jazz band geeks. So that makes you the Dave Clark Five: mediocre, unremarkable, and only notable because of that time you used a rubber band to launch a paperclip at the math teacher for a laugh and ended up taking her eye out instead. In the immortal words of another Dave (who was inducted into the Hall last year), "Class dismissed!"

Leonard Cohen To Enter Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame - Tower Of Song To Remain Primary Residence
Filed under: Events, Leonard Cohen | By DrHGuy | December 14, 2007 at 10:02 am

It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll But I Like It
On March 10, 2008, Leonard Cohen will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in ceremonies at Manhattan’s Waldorf Astoria hotel.1

I’m happy that Leonard Cohen is being honored. I’m sure a lot of Leonard Cohen fans are similarly happy about it. And, I hope Leonard Cohen is happy about being elected to another Hall of Fame (he was previously inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame).

Beyond that - well, as you may have heard, it’s only rock ‘n roll, but I like it.

The Other Guys
The Ampersand entertainment news feed2 of The National Post, which advises us that it is “Canada’s trusted source for national news, financial news, world news, commentary, entertainment and sport,” opens its coverage of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees with this query:

What do Madonna, the Vultures, John Mellencamp, The Dave Clark Five, and Leonard Cohen have in common?

Their answer is “They’re all officially famous.”

The more accurate Heck of a Guy answer is

They are all entertainers who will be entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 - except The Vultures, which are “medium to large-sized birds that are adapted to a diet of dead animals. They have weak feet with blunt talons and bare heads to prevent the feathers from becoming dirty while feeding. Their long, broad wings are efficient for long distance soaring. Vultures regurgitate food from their crops for their young instead of carrying prey to the nest.”3 And, according to Wikipedia, “A group of vultures is occasionally called a venue, and when circling in the air a group of vultures is called a kettle.”

Oh, and a group called The Ventures, known for surf rock instrumentals, will also enter the 2008 class of the Hall of Fame.

The other nominees, Afrika Bambaataa, Chic, The Beastie Boys, and Donna Summer were not selected for admission and, as far as I can determine, don’t even get the home version of the Hall of Fame game as a consolation prize.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Fun Fact
Leonard Cohen is the third Canadian solo act to be admitted to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Neil Young and Joni Mitchell preceded him.

Controversy
Not everyone is as Cohenthusiastic as Heck of a Guy. The opposing point of view is presented at its histrionic best in the Detroit News article, Rock Hall of Fame stirs controversy with some oddball choices. A representative excerpt follows:

Of this year’s inductees, Marsh [Dave Marsh is a rock critic, an editor of Detroit-based Creem Magazine, and a member of the Hall of Fame nominating committee] is happy that Madonna and the Dave Clark Five got in, but irate about Cohen and the Ventures. “I realized a long time ago part of the deal with this process is that there are some people who need to be in who I’d rather have my fingernails pulled out than listen to,” Marsh said. “Like the Grateful Dead (who were inducted in 1994). But at some level, it’s about fame, too. And none of that justifies the Ventures and Leonard Cohen. None of it. The problem is, you’ve got a bunch of people who know a lot about music on the (nominating) committee, but then you have a lot of people doing the voting who don’t.”

The article goes on to profile Leonard Cohen thusly: Leonard Cohen: A dour Canadian both lauded and derided for his “poetry,” he sang of “Suzanne” in a funereal drone.

My goodness, the motor city press has certainly worked itself into a tizzy.

For the record, I think they make a legitimate point. To delineate an art form called “Rock and Roll” that includes among its officially recognized group of best performers Grandmaster Flash, James Taylor, and Miles Davis but rejects Mitch Ryder, the Marvelettes, and Ted Nugent requires gerrymandering expertise of the level practiced in the Chicago City Council.

But, and here I adjust my theme only modestly, “Even though I like it, it’s only rock and roll.”

Most Popular Cohen Cliche
My unofficial, not statistically valid review of the use of Leonard Cohen song phrases in on-line stories about his election to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has “I’m Your Man” as occurring most frequently with “Everybody Knows” in second place.

No one has, until now, used …

The Future
Now that Leonard Cohen is officially a rocker, fans should be alert to any signals that has begun to assimilate, affecting those characteristics rampant in the (gated) communities of rock gods. Possible signs and symptoms follow:

He insists on calling his next tour “Leonardpalooza” (or the equally worrisome variation, “The Poetpalooza”)
He takes up the electric guitar, begins wearing some serious bling, refers to Jarkko and Anjani as his posse, and wonders aloud about the cost of giant flames, helicopter entries, and other stage effects.
He treats one of the paparazzi rudely, refusing to give him more than thee muffins and cutting him off abruptly after two hours
He does the traditional naked Rolling Stone cover shot (preceded by many others, most famously by John Lennon, most infamously by Rosario Dawson, Rose McGowan, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears, and most auspiciously by David Cassidy)
Like the others, he begins covering songs; like the others, he covers songs by Leonard Cohen
This time, instead of spending five years in a Zen monastery on Mount Baldy, he checks into a nicely appointed Rehab-Spa for five weeks

Conclusion
There’s only one thing left for me to say:

Rock On, Leonard

And if you run into Bruce or Prince in New York, tell them DrHGuy says “Hi.”

Hey! That's a nice looking place. Looks like the Louvre. As long as everyone behaves themselves, and doesn't start throwing wine bottles around, it will likely still be standing for another year or two. *sigh* yes. Bryan Adams. As a Canadian, I am for as many cheeseball Canadians in there as possible.

Hi Yankovic ~

I see "Lennon His Life and Work" on the 'front' there. Is that a 'banner' regarding an exhibit going on, or is that a side of the building with a 'wing' devoted to him? I can't read the rest of what's on it, so I'm guessing it's an exhibit... except I didn't realize they hosted temporary exhibits there.

Thanks.

I would imagine temporary exhibits would be the life-blood of a place like this. 'See the exhibit of Eric Clapton's guitars' etc. And pay heavily for the privilege.

Funny, I was thinking about Lennon last night. I was watching old videos, and the 'Starting Over' video hit me, as up until that point, we saw John in sneakers and the requisite battered jeans. But, in Starting Over, we have John, in a voluminous blue leather swing-back coat, fur trim, cashmere, all the way. Yoko in cashmere and mega-diamond stud earrings, accepting, not responding to, John's admiration. Then she, looking down on the mourners singing "Give Peace a Chance". I wonder what reviews would have come of that had it been in good taste to be critical of a 'last' video, obviously tinkered with by Yoko. Such is Rock and Roll. And here, in this Hall, is where we get to see it all. That's what it's for. Not just pricey dinners, but 'Rock and Roll'.

You're right that it would be the life blood, Linda; it just never occurred to me [just another 'duh' moment ;-) ].

I haven't seen that video that you're describing... or at least don't recall it at the moment.
