So what can I say...paper is done and handed in and I haven't been back in many moons.

Honestly, the atmosphere here scares me. The amount (can't find the word) time/life/etc you're all putting towards this man is, dare I say, overboard in my eyes.

bored and figured I'd come visit....

Dear Dubbsy,

First, Welcome to the Forum. Second, so you want us to write your paper for you, eh? For a longtime follower, much less a neophyte, two days and Leonard Cohen are all but mutually-exclusive concepts and terms. How are you with deadlines? There are a number who, though they know much about Leonard, realize with a serious wink that, in reality, they just may know nothing at all.

There are a vast amount of articles on Leonard posted both on this site [go to Jarkko's main page], as well as Marie Mazur's site [accessible via Jarkko's main page], plus another one very recently noted here by a young man who has started his own. I've looked quickly for his link, to no avail, but will Edit my post if I find it. In the meantime, perhaps someone else will give it to you, or some specifics for your paper. If the FAQs about Leonard section was completed, I would point you there, but right now, it's only in the making. Anything that would constitute an excellent paper can be found between the sites mentioned.

I would hope to see you back here after you've completed your paper, realizing that you have not happened upon Leonard by chance. I wish you a high grade on your paper.

Dubbsy, Usually when we write papers we pick a subject that we know something about, at least, that has interested us enough that we are familar with it. I don't think you should pick this artist for your paper as there is entirely too much ground for you to cover to do a good job coming to it not even knowing much of who he is what his best songs were. Maybe you could buy a few CDs and poetry books and in a year or so plan on writing a paper on this complex artist if his work genuinely interests you.

And with all due respect, Dubbsy, if you do intend to be the one to compose this paper, I feel Lightning's answer to you is the far better and more realistic one....even to the extent that you don't really even know his most well known works, and have only gathered that he's a Canadian song writer. You'll be shortchanging both Leonard and yourself to do otherwise, and he gets misrepresented plenty enough already. I still invite you to stay and learn about him....or return to do so after your letter on whatever has been written. I still don't feel your encounter has been by chance.

Hi Dubbsy - why did you pick Leonard were you given options or did someone suggest him?

You have picked a worthwhile person to do a paper on. I think you can proably glean a lot of what you seek from this forum without our help but if you have specific questions you will get a barrage of answers

Honestly, picking the name was by chance. I was given the option of picking an artist from a list of names, and his was the one I took. Unfortunately, I'm not the hugest fan of poetry, so I was at a loss with most of the names I could pick. I'll agree, writing about something I know about would be MUCH easier, however that wasn't really an option.

However, the paper must begin.....

Dear Dubbsy ~

Then dig in deep and read a lot before you write ~ or take notes on quotes that really strike you. :? After a lot of reading, you'll forget where you've seen what. Better yet, scan [visually] articles and print hard-copy so you can highlight and select. You have a tough task ahead of you.

Why only 2 days?

Because unfortunately I've had a million things going on in my personal life the last 2 weeks and haven't had time to get to this paper.

However, since I last stopped by, I have strongly familiarized myself with his Biographical life and have made a huge dent in this project.
I'll probalby have to do some searching through the forums here....see if I can find some of your responses to his works (mainly poetry I guess)

I'm sorry to say but you can never learn enough about LC in 2 days to write a paper.

I've been a fan for almost 20 years and still feel inadequate when I post on this board as there are so many here who know more than me.

BTW - What sort of course are you doing that you have 2 days to write a paper on someone you know nothing about who is famous in a field in which you have no interest?

JTS (Was this an assignment handed out on 1st April?)

Well I'm going to have to do my best....

No, I've had the assignment for probably a couple of weeks, but like I said, I've got a million things going on and I ended up putting it off. I never expected it to be quite this difficult.

This is for an English course - one of which is required or else I would not be there.

Dubbsy, Have you come across any songs or poems that you've liked, that seemed to apply to you life, strike you as beautiful or made you think or something? Do have yet have any feel for the soul that created them? If not this paper is just an obnoxious chore, slavery even. The reason many people visit this forum is that they've found something in this poet that's magic for them. You can find it too. Search for it and let us know when you do.

As I've done a fair amount of looking here, I really haven't found what I'm looking for. A point to this project is to talk about what people have to say about a particular work.

I've listened to a few songs and looked over them and decided this would be a great place to get feelings about them from other people (as I can't seem to really find reviews/etc of particular pieces)

So, if you would....
What is your response to these works? What do you have to say about these?

Chelsea Hotel-- "I can't keep track of each fallen robin" Is this a fitting tribute to Janis Joplin? Is an unintentional overdose turning your back on the crowd? Do men like to find bitches (non- servile, subordinate women) in compromising positions to bring them down? Is this a "love song?" ("Besides I don't think of you that often.") Is it worth staying alive for relationships like these? Why is this song named for the hotel rather than the woman? Compare with "In the Quiet Morning" by Mimi Farina or Song to Janis Joplin by Ed Sanders.

You may say that I grow I bitter, but aren't your two days well and truly over?

Call me a cynic but this is now taking on the status of wind up.
