On the chance someone is still out there...

Post by MonTX »

Saddest day in a long while for me  - I CANNOT FIND A SONG THAT I REMEMBER LEONARD.C RECORDING!!!!
I searched a day's worth of sources, BUT I FAILED. Maybe I am remembering incorrectly, but I definitely don't think SO!
Umpteen years ago my brother sent me a copy of "Sound of Silence," sung by Leonard. I saved it to a thumb drive, which I seem to have misplaced. 'Coast to Coast' notoriously used Cohen's version of the S&G song to close out their Sunday night shows. They no longer do. So, I can't listen to it there, anymore. All to bring me to my questions:
DID LEONARD record the song?
If yes, WHY would it no longer be available - through any source? (note: I can only find him reading the lyrics to the song as tribute to S&G.)
I am so saddened by my predicament. The song was but one major way I remember my brother, who took his own life.
I hope someone can answer and will respond. AND, I hope they have good news regarding the song.
Blessings

Hello,
I am sure there are people here who can answer your question more definitively, but I can tell you that apparently, Leonard recited the song's lyrics as a bonus track on a Paul Simon tribute album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWvv8WSkrv0&t=17s
Condolences regarding your brother. That is not easy to carry.
I hope you can find a better answer than mine. If it is out there, someone here will probably know.

I am not aware of Leonard ever having recorded this song other than the spoken version. But, maybe somebody else might know.

A quick google search brought up the suggestion that the person singing "Sound of Silence" used on the Coast to Coast programme was not Leonard Cohen, but Loic Valmy. Here is Valmy's version:

Does that ring a bell?

Thank you for your thoughtful sentiments. And, thank you for taking the time to respond. I can find the video where LC recites the lyrics, but sadly not with him singing it.

I copied and pasted the email from my brother to me with a link to the YouTube of LC singing (*see below). The link leads to a page stating the "video is no longer available"... possibly because it was copyrighted material. Who knows?

My brother was introducing me to Cohen's music. I can see the content of the video in my mind's eye --- no doubt that it was LC, absolutely NO doubt in my mind.

*email from my brother, as it appears in my inbox:

dunno if this is your cup of tea, but....

Side Note: After the investigation, the sheriff's department gave me his laptop and cellphone, which they had taken. There are only two emails in his sent folder addressed to me that include YTube video links (one for the song; the other about '5G').
AI is telling me LC never recorded the song.
Mandela Effect? I might be losing it if not.

I listened to the L.Valmy version. It was definitely not him. I found where they played the 'Disturbed' version (which can also be found on YTube). I need to go further back in C2C history - 2019 to post Aug/2022 - to settle my thinking. Searching the Sunday night bumpers is quite a chore, for sure, as the site doesn't maintain the page last viewed (always going back to the most recent show date). Thanks for the response.

Mandela Effect?

Although one cannot always trust AI answers (sometimes they are patenty false), one cannot always trust the veracity of one's own memories, either. I would be astonished to learn that Leonard recorded a sung version of Sound of Silence that was widely available on Youtube at some point, but which now seems to be remembered only by you. (I believe that the Mandela Effect occurs when numerous people share the same false memory, but that does not seem to apply here.)

It is entirely possible -- and perhaps plausible and even probable -- that your brother sent you a video of Leonard Cohen singing something (but not Sound of Silence), and around the very same time, you may have heard Leonard reciting Sound of Silence, and perhaps your mind has conflated the two original memories into one false memory. You may also have really wanted to hear Leonard actually sing, and not just recite, Sound of Silence, and your mind has created a false memory to this effect.

The mind is a fascinating and mysterious thing! Rest assured that you are not necessarily "losing it" if you have a false memory -- it happens to most, if not all, people.

My heart is with you in your brother's shocking death. I'm so sorry. Might you be able to contact Coast to Coast and, hopefully, get some answers?
