Ein großer moderner Singer-Songwriter, ein »Troubadour«, ist im Jahr 2016 verstorben. Dieses Programm, ist eine Hommage an seine Kunst, und stellt eine Verbindung zum französischen Renaissance-Chanson dar.
Leonard Cohen, der sich selbst gerne als »Chansonnier« bezeichnete, ist im französischsprachigen Montréal in Kanada aufgewachsen. Er wird als Dichter und für sein sensibles musikalisches Gefühl für das Wort geschätzt. Dieses Projekt verbindet Cohen musikalisch und poetisch mit früheren Generationen von Songwritern. Das berühmte Chanson Susanne un jour aus dem 16. Jahrhundert von Orlando di Lasso trifft auf Cohens Suzanne. Josquins Adieu mes amours oder Tänze von Pierre Attaingnant (Paris, 1529) kombinieren sich mit Cohens Liedern und die Epochen nähern sich. Mit der Kenntnis der Praktiken der Renaissancemusik entstehen neue Diminutionen über Cohens Musik, auch neue akkordische und umspielende Begleitungen für Viola da Gamba oder Laute nach Vorbildern des späten 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts.
