I just saw the film yesterday, I've seen it before but this was my first time as a Cohen fan. I knew that the songs "waiting for the miracle" and "the future" were in it, but I didn't knew that "Anthem" was in it as well. First let me say that WFTM is a perfect opener for a film. In the intro before leonard starts singing, amazing, you really get the feeling that you're in the middle of nowhere (like a desert) and somethings 'bout to go down, in this case Mickey and Mallory, in the other case Leonard Cohen. Then when he starts his deep almost mumble kind of singing, you have to surrender completely, for this is the Devil himself singing.
"The future" in the end is also a very suitable and sarcastic closing song, a "happy"-end-song if you will. But the song that made my heart pound the most was "Anthem". Just to watch a prison riot with the music of "Anthem" in the back is brilliant, thank you Oliver stone

. But the best part is when you see Tommy lee Jones' face when he know that he's going to die, and then hearing Leonard singing in the back: "There's is a crack, a crack in everything. That's how the light get's in". That pretty much did it for me

. The fact that the rest of the music in the film is delivered by great names like: RATM "Bombtrack", "Take the power back", Bob Dylan (don't know which song?) and The cowboy junkies "Sweet jane", just makes the soundtrack complete. The highlights of course being the songs by Leonard Cohen, but also "bombtrack" exploding just when Woody harrelson smashes his rifle in the prison guards face

. This is what the future must sound like

"I see angels Mickey, they're comin' down for us from heaven. I see you ridin' a big red horse. You're drivin' the horses, whippin' 'em they're spittin', frothin' all over the mouth. I see the future and there's no death 'cause you and I are angels."

Great film, great soundtrack.
I personally think the music makes the film twice as good! From Len to L7 is fantastic and the Nine Inch Nails stuff is awesome.

I always wished just once Len would have got someone like Trent Reznor to produce one of his albums. The combination would've been great.

speaking as a true nine inch nails fan, i enjoyed what trent did for the soundtrack. he did produce it. i honestly never knew he was a fan of cohen. i mean, i guess he ought to be, hahaha. but i never put the two together until i realized that trent produced the soundtrack, which had both cohen songs, excluding "anthem." there was a LOT of music in the movie. and yes, "the future" during the end credits was the PERFECT touch. because essentially that is what the movie was about. all this evil going on, BUT, "love is the only engine of survival," and that is what micky and mallory had for each other. that's the KEY element of the film, and cohen gets it. but obviously he didn't write the song for the movie. so should we say oliver stone gets it? hahaha.
anybody here who knows the film and the soundtrack like the nin track, "burn"?? it's not on any nin studio album but it's one of my favorite nin songs. it just gets all fast and crazy in the middle and end of the song. something faster than speed metal. AND the riff is killer! i was quite impressed and rocking my ass off listening to it. hahaha.
also, kleinschmidt, if you've seen the director's cut, which i own on dvd, tommy lee jones' warden character gets his head impaled on a stick during that riot scene. quite gruesome but one of the best parts in the latter half of the film, next to the wayne gale sacrifice, of course. hahaha. i must say, that is one hell of a performance from robert downey, jr. i love his character and it's one of his best performances.
are you all aware that quentin tarantino came up with the story? i don't think he liked how oliver stone made it the way he did though, because i think oliver stone took liberties in the film's message about the media and its portrayal of evil.
but the best line in the movie comes from richard wright (funny guy) as the psychologist, who is being interviewed by wayne gale about his opinions on micky and mallory, and the gale tells him, "mallory knox has said that she wants to kill you," and he replies, "i never really believe what women tell me." hahahahaha!!
