Flying 4,000 miles to catch Cohen - Am I nuts?

Post by horo1984 »

Greetings from the tiny city-state of Singapore...

Here's what happened:
1. On impulse, I bought a Platinum ticket to LC's 2nd Sydney show the moment the tickets went on sale.
2. That proved to be a wise choice, as Platinum tickets were sold out that very day
HOWEVER
3. It suddenly hit me that
- I would be flying 4,000 miles;
- staying a mere two nights in Sydney before catching the a return flight (my current job does not afford me the luxury of disappearing for too many days at a stretch); and
- will be all on my own (unfortunately none of my family or friends are quite as enthusiastic about LC's music as me)!

I am a big enough fan of LC, I guess - been listening to his Essentials and Dear Heather, as well as viewing his videos almost daily - it's a great way to unwind.

But do re-read point 3 and tell me - am I nuts? Thanks.

P.S. I wish to goodness he had announced his Cambodia tour earlier - it's much much nearer!

The only thing "nuts" about your question is that you even ask it all. :D

What you are doing sounds pretty normal to me. :D

So, will you go to Cambodia also?

Great first post! Welcome to the Forum. You will have the good company of many, many "nutters" here.

horo1984,

Welcome to the nutty world of the LC forum! You definitely will not think you're 'nutty' after attending the concert - especially if it's your first one ever!

While I cannot be certain without performing a full diagnostic procedure (which would require you to purchase another concert ticket and make travel arrangements for me so that I could examine your reactions during a live Cohen performance - contact my office with funding information to cover the logistics as well as my exorbitant hourly professional fee), it appears that you are not nuts but are instead exhibiting rather classic signs of Cohenphilic Personality Disorder (see http://1heckofaguy.com/2009/11/18/first ... -disorder/) and that, further, your presentation, while indicative of the full-blown syndrome, falls within two standard deviations of the mean in the distribution of such symptoms. To review a compendium of these symptoms reported by various individuals suffering from this disorder, see You May Be A Leonard Cohen Fan If … at http://1heckofaguy.com/you-may-be-a-leo ... %E2%80%A6/

Hi Horo1984 - sounds perfectly reasonable to me! I made the 3,000 mile journey to New York to see him after attending two London concerts (from friends and family - 'it's the same show, right? The one you've already seen twice?'). At least here you are among people who truly understand your actions, no explanation required ;-) :D

@horo1984. Many forum fans came long distances to the last two concerts of 2009 in Las Vegas and San Jose. If you check out my Forum Fan Video (bridgebud), you will see the names of some of the countries. At 3.23, there is a gentleman from Australia who flew over 8,000 miles to attend the concerts. All perfectly normal, in my view. :D

Hello again,

Many thanks for assuring me that my sanity's still intact :D

Thanks also for the warm welcome from everyone, especially from bridger15 (checked out your YouTube video - it's certainly amazing how universal LC's fanbase is) and DrHGuy (your list sure cracked me up - but then, isn't that how the light gets in?).

Now to settle my airfare and accommodation... will be looking for a place near Sydney's Acer Arena. Any suggestions, or should I take this part of my discussion to another message board?

Thanks in advance!

Lester

Hi L. Kho ~

Not as far as you or some of the others, but less time there once arrived.

I traveled approx. 2700 miles from my home in Florida to San Jose, arriving there late in the afternoon, going to the concert that night, back to the airport after the hotel gathering and departure at approx. 6 AM, without even a lie down. If I had the money, I'd repeat my well-reasoned actions.

Welcome to the Forum :D .

No, not nuts at all. I was fortunate enough, after flying 3000 miles from Boston to San Jose not only to see the very special last North American concert, ( complete with polka dot blouses thrown at Leonard on the stage as part of "Closing Time"!) but also to sit next to Lady Di and Lizzy..... two fabulous Forum members!!! Topped off with a visit with Robert Kory, Bob Metzger and Roscoe Beck at the Fairmont bar, the latter two at 3 am......Does it get any better!!

Awww... thank you for your sweet kindness, Leonard :D . The positive impression I had of you in New York was confirmed in San Jose. That's the in-person stuff. I've always liked and respected you on the Forum.

What a wonderful use of your time at 3 AM 8) . I talked with Bob Metzger for a substantial while in the lounge because of a question very personally important to me. Such a wonderful man he is, too [the "too" is a reference back to "you"] ~ it felt so much like I was meeting up and talking with an old schoolmate... just that comfortable, down-to-earth talking that I appreciate so much.

You’re wonderfully nuts! How absolutely spontaneous and carefree, if even for just a couple of days. These moments become the memories ones that will last a lifetime … ‘I remember the time I flew to Australia for a concert – what a time’. ..
Good for you, you'll not regret it. I’m horribly envious of all our travelers but do love reading the reports.
