Leonard officially premiered another new song, "the darkness," in concert in Nashville on November 5 and fortunately, we have a great quality youtube of the event:
Here is my video of "The Darkness"

The song was first captured in soundcheck in Venice on August 3:

But Mary - you are scaring me - that I missed some? There are only two?

I'm loving the arrangements.

well, he's played 3 so far: Lullaby, "Prisoner Song", and The Darkness. So cool that he's doing this, and interesting he has only debuted new songs in the US, though perhaps they will continue to flourish in the setlist next year. The Darkness really rocks, but I'm glad that he payed the "Prisoner" in Durham because, as uncanny as ever, those lyrics hit home at just the right moment. Hopefully the continual performing of these songs will entice them to get into the studio quicker!

I stand corrected astranger! You are correct. Apologies to Mary - and actually I guess I did miss some - or one. Anyway, I'm glad Marie separated out the song and started this thread - and was wondering if anyone had figured out lyrics from the Venice performance. I searched back and found that merton had posted some lyrics -

merton wrote:Hi,

Having listened a few times can I offer the following rough transcription of the lyrics with apologies to Leonard Cohen

..... it was drinking from your cup,
I got the darkness
from your little ruby cup
I said 'is this contagious?'
You said 'just drink it up'

I've got no future baby
I know my days are few
I've got no future though
As I say I know my days are few
Is the present not that pleasant (?)
Just a lot of things to do

I don't like your sticky little bud
I don't like alcohol
I don't need your loving touch
That's always been your call
Cause there's nothing but the darkness
Makes any sense to me at all

I should have seen the darkness
It was right behind your eyes
All those pools so deep and heartless
I just had to take a dive
Ah yea but winning you was easy
Ah but the darkness was the price

Got no future (x3)

Yea I know the days are few
The present is not that pleasant(?)
Just a lot of things to do

(AND THEN QUASIMODO THE BELLS THE BELLS !!!!)

This is what I have been able to figure out of the lyrics ...

I got the darkness baby,
Drinking from your cup.
I’ve got the darkness baby,
from your little ruby cup.
I said ‘is this contagious?’
You said ‘just drink it up.’

I’ve got no future
I know my days are few.
The present’s not that pleasant
Just a lot of things to do.
I thought the past would last me
But the darkness got there too.

I should have seen it coming
It was right behind your eyes
You were young and it was summer
Ahhh I had to take a dive
Yeah winning you was easy
But the darkness was the price

I don’t use no cigarette
I can’t taste the alcohol
I ain’t had much loving yet
Ah but that’s always been your call
Ever since the darkness
Don’t make much sense to me at all

I used to love the radio
And I used to love with you
I loved the early morning
And pretended it was you
But I got the darkness baby
And I got it worse than you.

Caught the darkness
Drinking from your cup
I’ve caught the darkness
Drinking from your cup
I said ‘is this contagious?’
You said ‘just drink it up.’

Sorry if this was discussed elsewhere, I can't find it (please direct me to it if there is already a thread on this). I was wondering if, in people's opinion, The Darkness is a song about depression. Thanks!

Which new song is Lullaby, is there a clip anywhere of it? People seemed to think 2 new songs, then 3, then everyone agreed, but I am in the darkness! :( (sorry Ken)

Lullaby was first sung in concert at Grand Prairie, TX April 3, 2009. The YouTube clip of that performance (audio only) is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUjVhQc1aIY

Albert Nooan has an excellent (I know, "excellent" following "Albert Noonan" is redundant) video from the July 23, 2009 Dublin performance (starting an instance after the song begins) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InQ69VP182s

Thanks DrHGuy for helping me out. I cannot remember what wonderfully exciting things I was doing on 3 April and 23 July to have missed Lullaby, 'bout time I hauled myself out to pasture I think. Maybe I just slept through everything, like the dormouse.

Just to preserve Albert's "excellent" reputation I will have to take full responsibility for missing the first line or so of this wonderful song. I attended the concert with my daughter, not Albert, on that night. I realised from the first chords of the song that it was Lullaby and pressed record, unfortunately I should have double clicked,it was Emily who pointed this out to me, not too late thank goodness!

I just love the new song titled The Darkness

I have listened to it repeatedly and believe I have the lyrics correct.

There are a few changes to what has been posted here already..of course I could be wrong
someone will be sure to correct me if I am.

I caught the darkness baby,
Drinking from your cup,
I caught the darkness baby,
from your little ruby cup.
I said is this contagious?
You said 'just drink it up'

I've got no future,
I know my days are few
The presents not that pleasant
just a lot of things to do
I thought the past would last me
but the darkness got there too

I should have seen it coming
it was right behind your eyes
you were young and it was summer
ahhh-I had to take a dive
yeah winning you was easy
but the darkness was the prize

I don't use no cigerette
and I can't taste the alcohol
I ain't had much loving yet
ah but that's always been your call
ever since the darkness
doesn't make much sense to me at all

I used to love the rainbow
And I used to love the view
I loved the early morning
and I pretended it was new
but I caught the darkness baby
and I got it worse than you

caught the darkness
drinking from your cup
I caught the darkness
drinking from your cup
I said is this contagious?
you said 'just drink it up'
