On CBC - TV at 9:00 PM (Eastern Time):
Leonard Cohen: Everybody Knows

Watch a musical tribute to Leonard Cohen, one of Canada's most influential poets and singers-songwriters.
I think it's from the Tribute show from the Montréal Jazz Fest last year.

I happened to catch the first part of it tonight on CBC. Loved Garou doing Everbody Knows.

I saw the original telecast of that Tribute to Leonard Cohen last Novemeber and I agree with you about Garou. I like the way he builds it slowly.

I have to disagree on Garou, I was at the show and I really, really hated his cover. He clearly hardly knew the lyrics, was constantly reading the monitor and still made mistakes. It seemed to me that he was there more to show himself than to pay tribute to Leonard Cohen unlike all the other artists who were there that night.

IMHO, the best covers at that Tribute were by Adam Cohen.

Also interesting is a short interview of two fans, one of which was Adam's babysitter.

Don't know if this number made it to the CBC broadcast, but Michel Pagliaro did a gritty rock &* roll version of The Future that caught the rage in the tune at the same concert.

I thought Garou showed us exactly how not to sing one of Leonard's song. To me, it was how I imagine Frank Sinatra would have performed Everybody Knows. Garou missed all the nuances that Leonard does so well: "... the good guys lost" needs to be really spat out with bitterness, the irony of "discreet" ought to be accentuated, and the refrain "everybody knows" should be sung with resigned world-weariness. None of that in this anodyne performance.

I also think that Everybody Knows should always be sung an octave lower. It is, after all, Leonard's wonderful rumbling bass that makes the ladies go moist.

Exactly !
I don't think he has given much thought about what the lyrics mean (let alone take the time to learn them..), he was probably too busy thinking about how he was going to pose for the camera.
I would have prefered Frank Sinatra.

Agree with Darling and Hydriot - a terrible version by Garou - he just doesn't get it.

Whereas, Michel Pagliaro injects the right amount of anger into The Future - it works. And what a true tribute - all the band members wearing hats :D . Thanks for posting the link Dream Warrior!

Best regards,
Mary
